| Abstract | The percentage of elderly people in society will increase significantly in the next 20 years. Because this population will have some reduction in their liver and renal functions, we can foresee that the effects and the toxicity of many drugs are likely to be altered in this population, and that proper dose adjustments will be required.; We have conducted a study where we have demonstrated that elderly patients with bladder cancer have reduced renal function, which resulted in a plasma concentration of paclitaxel (an anti-cancer drug used in the treatment of bladder cancer), that was 1.5 times higher than what was seen in younger patients. We conclude that there is a need to adjust the dosage of paclitaxel when treating elderly patients. |
