| Abstract | This study examined genetic features in the development of visual recognition memory using longitudinal data from the Colorado Adoption Project (CAP; DeFries et al., 1981). We followed the approach for the biometric decomposition of components of change in twin data analysis (McArdle, 2006), with genetic correlation revised for non-twin siblings. Four scores measuring visual recognition memory were found to represent two operationally independent factors. The two factors displayed different developmental trajectories as well as different patterns of genetic variance over age. In addition, the factors were affected by the telephone test protocol in different ways. The influence from the shared family environment was small and almost nonexistant in adulthood. The issue of missing data was addressed. The results did not seem to be biased by longitudinal attrition. However, the large proportion of incomplete sibling pairs potentially lowered the power of the biometric analyses. |
