INDEX OF
VOLUME XII:
MANUSCRIPTS: POEMS AND PLAYS
Introduction: The poems composed by Soon Hyun were in a classical Chinese
tradition and written in Chinese ideographs. The poems were composed to
include, in addition to the poetic thoughts, a personal style and quality of
calligraphy, and poems written on scrolls included a painting done by the
classical brush strokes of calligraphy.
Hyun's calligraphy in poetry and painting reveal skills obtained by
classical studies and training of Korean Scholars. During the Lee Dynasty,
scholars were required to pass the difficult Kwa Kur, annual civil examination
contests. Only a few persons with the highest grades in poetry and essays from
tens of thousands of national contestants received appointments as Court
Officials.
Every poem denotes the approximate date and place where it was composed.
In this manner, Soon Hyun follows the literary tradition of Korean scholars who
could compose a poem upon seeing a magnificent scene of nature or witnessing a
historical event.
Soon Hyun's collected poems are for a period from 1915-1961. These poems
have been arranged chronologically with a brief biographical sketch of himself.
Notebook (2) seems to be the originals from which the above is rearranged.
