Ahn Chun Saengf President
The Independence Hall of Korea
Namwha-Ri Mokchon-Myon, Chonwon-kun
Chung Chong Nam-Dof 333-8^0
Dear Mr, Ahn,
I am the oldest son of the late Rev* Soon Hyun (£ $$ ). In October
of this years I traveled to Chonwonf Korea and visited the Independence Hall
of Korea* It was the most magnificent sight, not only impressive, but beautiful.
In viewing the exhibit of the historical struggle of the Korean
people for their national independence and freedom, I was especially interested in the exhibits of the Korean Provisional Government in Shanghai. The
documents and photos, not to mention the life-like figures of the leaders
were quite exhaustive.
Yet there was one glaring omission in the entire exhibit, the name
and the role of my father, Rev. Soon Hyun, played in the Korean Provisional
Government. He was one of the original organizers, and the Vice-Minister of
Foreign Affairs. Among the numerous missions he carried out, in'1922 he was
appointed the Ambassador Plenipotentiary, to the United States. There in Washington he submitted a petition to the then-Secretary of State, Charles Evans
Hughes, for recognition and aid.
Posthumously, on March 1, 1963?
"In recognition of his sacrifice for the cause of our national independence, we proudly confer on the late patriot Soon Hyun this Certificate
of Citation and the Medal of Honor.
"The Power of Authority of the Presidency
The Chairman of the Executive Body of National Reconstruction
General of the Army, Park Chung Hee (seal) 1963
Prime Minister Kim Hyun Chul (signed)
"This Certificate number 2?6 is hereby recorded in the file of the
Certificate of Citation and Medal of Honor.
"Executive Secretary of the Cabinet Lee Suk Jai (signed)."
