MY BEST SELF IN THE HOME, CHURCH, & COMMUNITY
At the Annual Conference of the Kauai Christian Young Peoples'
Council at Camp Naue, held on May 20-21, 1933, delegates from
various churches assembled to plan and discuss on the following subjects namely; My Best Self In the Home, My Best Self in the church
and My Best Self in the Community. It was suggested at the conference that ideas or opinions relative to these three items be distributed to various churches. A summary on .the theme of "My Best
Self in the Home, Church & Community" is given as follows:
MY BEST SELF IN THE HOME:
1. Obedience:
(a) We should not make our own laws (habits of mind) regardless of the rights of others in the family.
(b) We should not always accept the laws of the family without
question.
In Oriental homes strict obedience was expected of children
but today our laws should be made elastic to meet the needs and
changes of the time. We should therefore meet our parents on
common ground and discuss our problems.
2. Respect for Opinions of Parents:
(a) We often disregard our parents1 opinions of right and
wrong-standards by which they have been governed and expect them to accept our modern opinions. This leads to
family clashes and tends to creak up the fine family life,
it leads the young people to leave home, keep bad company,
form bad habits and spoil one's social life. The church
and other agencies can help many adjust these conditions.
(b) We must be honest in our explanations and discussions with
our parents. We should not force them to accept our
modern opinions by deceitfully labelling them as accepted
customs of the country in which we are now living.
3. Cooperation in home duties:
(a) Cooperation in home duties develops a better understanding, brings about a harmonious and helpful attitude
in our home life and also eliminates a lot of backaches
and heartaches. A spirit of love, sympathetic understanding and consideration should prevail within the
family.
MY BEST SELF IN THE CHJRCH:
1. What work is being done by young people in any of the churches.
(a) Sunday School teaching.
(b) Officers in the church.
(c) Taking responsibility in young peoples' organizations including Christian Endeavor Societies, Young Peoples'
Fellowship, Young peoples' Clubs.
(d) Participating in prayer meetings.
(e) Singing in choir.
(f) Hold language classes during the week for younger boys
and girls.
