Korean Songbird a Hit
in US Premiere
By LEE MORTIMER
Neighbor Coleman is debarred by the ethics of his
calling from divulging wh.at he sees at an out-of-town pre-
Broadway tryout. But we ginmill critics have no such code.
So I can tell you about thef-
American preem of Korean songbird Florence Ahn from Honolulu
who opened under wraps at the
beautiful Casa Seville, in swank
Franklin Square, L. I.
Miss Ahn, a peanut-crowding
five feet, was a sensation, with a
big wonderful voice that dispenses with mikes and all such
artificial aids. Said to be the
finest singer of her race, she confines her offerings to grand
opera arias and standard selections, and these evoke cheers
from cabaret customers, who are
supposed to appreciate only jive
and rumba.
The petite prima donna is a
positive bet for such sophisticated
rooms as Versailles, Le Directoire
or any East Side hotel.
Gene Seville, smart impresario
of the Long Island retreat, has
assembled a fine, hard-hitting bill,
with Bob Sheppard, personable
young funnyman, the emcee. Bob
contributes a couple of hilarious
bits that slay you.
Sensational is the description
for the Whirlwinds, a socko
roller-skating turn. Ramona
Long, lovely, long-legged beaut,
shines in the tap department.
She's a natural for a Broadway
show.
