Korean Bomb Thrower Wounds High Japanese Officials
in Shanghai One Succumb*
Shortly before noon on Friday, April 29, when the Japanese
national anthem was being emng by the large crowds (nearly all
Japanese) attending the celebration at the Hongkew Park in
Shanghai of the Birthday of the Itaperor of Japan, a Korean
named In Fung-fa placed a hand grenade on the platform where
the leaders of the celebration were assembled, with the result
that the following persons were injured, the nature of the
Injuries being indicated:
H. Shlgemitsut Japanese Minister to China:-Serious
injuries to thighs and legs*
Ko Sural, Consul-General for Japan:- Wounds to left thigh*
General Y. Shlrakawa, Commander of the Japanese Army:-
Bad Injuries to left cheek, teeth and body*
It.-Sen. K. Uyeda, Commander of 9th Division, Japanese Army:-
Thrce toes amputated; injuries left shoulder.
Tiee-Admiral K. Somura, Commander of Japanese Navy:-
Loss of right eye. (lye later removed entirely by operation)*
Br. Kawabata, .President of Japanese Residents1 Association:-
Internal bleeding; chest wound* Injuries of most serious
character, resulting in his death at four o'clock the following
morning.
Mr* xomonc, Secretary-General, Japanese Residents1
Association:- Slightly injured.
Japanese sailor; Japanese photographer from Osaka Mainichl:-
Slight injuries.
At last reports all the Japanese wounded by the explosion, other
than Dr. Kawabata, Who had died, were progressing favourably.
Dr. Kawabata*a death was due to bleeding in the lungs caused by
penetration by the fragment* of the bomb. Six well-known
Japanese surgeons from Fukaoka Imperial University arrived during
the week tc attend the patient*. ? Operations for the removal of
the bomb fragments have been conducted with success. The operation
on Admiral Nomura was conducted by Dr. Purakawa. It lasted for one-
and-a half hour*, when his right eye which was blinded by the
fragments, was removed. Mr. Shlgemitsu was operated on for
removal of fragments by Dr. K. Tonga* head of the Fooming Hospital.
Grave fear was at first entertained that the minister might lose
his leg but this danger has been definitely removed.
Mr. Shlgemitsu Is suffering from more than 20 wounds from the
fragments between the sise of a fillet seed and that of a fingertip. Mr. Shlgemitsu, despite his wounds, dictated a number of
telegrams to Tokyo explaining the bombing* Mr. Shlgemitsu also
Issued a statement advising calmness among the local Japanese
residents. Similar instructions were issued to the Japanese Army
and Navy through^General Shlrakawa and Admiral Nomura*
Korean Recently Came from Chlentao
The Korean who committed the deed had recently come here from
the Chlentao district, which has been the scene of disorders
between Chinese and Japanese for the past year Incidental to
Korean revolutionary activities* The Korean's method of operation
was an exceedingly simple one. The above-mentioned prominent
Japanese were standing on an improvised platform, supported with
light stancMons about six feet high. While th* attention of
those assebled was concentrated on the singing of the Japanese
national anthem, he evaded the attempts of two troopers to
restrain him from pressing forward, walked to the edge of the
platform, and placed (rather than hurled) the grenade at the feet
of the assembled Japanese notables. The bomb, evidently of a
spring type, In which the explosion occurs about five seconds
after a pin Is removed, but made in imitation of a Japanese
military water bottle, exploded with terrific violence, blew a
