Um STORY OP RET, SOOM HYUI
Was born of an official family in the oity of Seoul,
Korea on March 81, 1879.
Education: From 6 to 17 years of age, was educated in the old Korean
Sohool learning the old Korean arithmetic, History,'
Literature, and the Chinese classics.
Prom 17 to 20 years of age learned the English language
plus the rooftern weat^rn education at the Royal English
Language School Seoul, Korea*
At the age of EO or in the year of 1890, was sent over to
Sokio, Japan by the then lorean Government and majored
Science and Mathematics at a sohool known as Jun Ten Kiu
£o Sa, Jokio, Japan. Graduated the said sohool in 1902.
In 1901 while in Japan, was converted to Christianity by
an American missionary known as Mr. Fisher from whom he
began to learn the christian.bible. Later he came in
contact with the early Methodist missionaries such as
George Helper Jones, D. A. Bunker, and W. A. loble.
And began to take up the course in theology and graduated
the Union Methodist Theological School Seoul, Korea in
December, 1911.
Experiences.In March,1903, he came to Hawaii as an interpreter with
the second shipment of the Korean immigrants. Vox the
first two years, worked on the Kahuku Sugar Plantation
as an interpreter. In Jimary 1905, was employed^the
Rev. J. W. Wadman the then supt. of the M* E. Mission in.
Honolulu, Hawaii as-bh evangelist on the island of Oahu,
then later was sent over to^lsland of Kauai where he
served for the kingdom until he was called back to Korea
by the late Dr. Geo* H_ Jones. During his service in
Hawaii, he built two churches on Oahu-Kahuku and Wailua,
and one church at Llhue, Kauai where he has been pastor
for the last ten years. He was admitted^he California
conference in If06. He also ^ started a night school
for the Korean foung people to learn the English language
in 1905 which became a large Korean Compound school later.
In May 1907, he returned to Seoul, Korea. He taught in
the Methodist Mission School for boys known as Pai Chei
Hak Dangf for two Jiears as head teacher* He was appointed
secretary to Bishop M. 0, Harris and served him as such
from 1909 to 1916 when he retired. He was ordined as
deacon and elder by Bishop Harris in 1900 and 191B re*
spectively. While in Korea he served the kingdom as
pastor of two largest churches in the city of.Seoul -"
. Chang Dong, First Methodist Church and Sang Dong, Mead
Memorial Methodist Church.
