'My Introduction To The Autobiography of the Reverend Soon Hyun'
©USA
I have written "My Introduction to the Autobiography of The Reverend Soon
Hyun" as the son of Papa, my father. My Introduction and The Autobiography break a
very long silence that dates back to the time of my father's mission as Korea's Minister
Plenipotentiary to the United States in Washington D.C. in 1920-21, a time period of
nearly 80 years. Because "My Introduction To..." is the very first by a Hyun to
challenge the prevailing histories of modern Korea, I take this opportunity to explain the
nature of the various assertions, allegations and opinions made therein.
I have avoided the use of footnotes to explain the basis for my statements. I am
not a professional historian who is able to make judgmental calls on the reliability of
sources. Because I cannot quote sources of information with confidence, I have - for this
Introduction - omitted footnotes, although I have read many histories of modern Korea in
the English language.
This omission should make it clear to the reader that my statements are strictly my
personal opinions, whether of a factual matter or an explanation of an event. My
Introduction is not to establish history but rather to provide an interpretation that I believe
is sorely needed and sorely lacking. And, of course, my interpretation comes with the
bias of being my father's son.
