Dear Editor:
The following may help old friends and new readers
of your newspaper to appreciate a national honor
which came recently to a former Kauai resident.
During the early 1900rs and later in the 1920fs and
30fs until his retirement in 1940, my father, the
Reverend Soon Hyun was well known in Kauai as the
"Korean Minister11. I grew up in Kauai during Papafs
second visit and participated in his vigorous ministry as pastor of the Korean Methodist Church
located in Kapaia.
Rev. Hyun did not wait for his island congregation
to come to his church, except once monthly and on
Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Most of the
time he went out attending to all the needs of his
people. He conducted church services in Kehaha and
Kapaa and prayer meetings at homes from Mana on the
west to Kilauea on the north. He also gave practical
help to the unemployed or those in trouble. He knew
how to minister Chinese herbs and acupuncture to the
ill. Rev. Hyun also had a law library he used to
help those in need of a little law.
