Selection committee talks initiated anew
The five-member presidential selection committee has met to discuss the presidential search, but no candidates have been named at this time.
Herbert Hartnack, chairman of the committee and member of the Board of Trustees, said that the selection process is just in its preliminary stages.
The committee is just "starting from the wreckage from before," he said.
A list of about 50 names compiled by the original search committee is available for use by the committee, but Hartnack said that none of these persons have been contacted.
The committee is not planning to use an outside agency to help in the selection process, Hartnack said, adding that they are not ruling out any possible resources.
"We have been instructed to use any and all resources necessary," he said.
The Student and Faculty Senates recently passed resolutions expressing concern that faculty and students be included in

youth boarded the bus at the Jefferson and Vermont intersection, apparendy carrying a gun in his pocket. When he sat down next to Johnson, the gun discharged, striking Johnson in the foot.
Sherman Oliver, on the bus during the shooting, said he saw the man flee on foot and enter the University Gardens apartment complex at the corner of Jefferson and Vermont.
Sgt. Dan Walliser of the Los Angeles Police Department said ‘ about 25 officers cordoned off the complex in an attempt to isolate the youth.
A police helicopter hovered
over the area and six university security officers stationed themselves along Vermont Avenue in front of the complex.
Police called off the search after about 30 minutes when they were unable to locate the youth.
Booker Whitlock, the bus driver, said he pulled over on the university side of Jefferson immediately after the shot. He said he first "thought somebody had busted a balloon." But when he stopped Johnson came running up to him shouting that he'd just been shot.
Whitlock said the youth forced his way out the rear door of the bus.
"I think of myself as a pioneer in the opening of a new territory for contact between China and the Western Culture," said Daniel Pollack, university professor and first United States pianist to go to China.
Pollack visited China in the last weeks of January after receiving an official invitation from the Chinese Ministry of Culture. The invitation was the byproduct of a meeting between Chinese and American pianists that Pollack attended at Occidental College in August 1978. The Chinese artists, including a prominent pianist, Liu Shih-Kun, were impressed with Pollack's work and decided to continue the relationship this year.
Pollack had met Liu before, but under more competitive circumstances. The two competed against each other as finalists some 20 years earlier in the 1958 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. There were no hard feelings between the two

A significant number of cars were parked on campus last fall with improper, expired, or altered parking permits, according to a report circulated in the university security and parking operations offices.
The report summarized a field audit survey conducted in January, comparing car license numbers with parking permit numbers and registration information.
"Final results show almost one-quarter of all second-car and carpool permits are not being used as originally intended, especially student second-car permits," the report said.
Although only one person was found to have both first and second cars on campus at the same time, "it can be assumed that there are others," the report said.
In addition, faculty/staff second-car permits have been used by employee children, according to the report.
Cars with faculty^taff permits have been seen parked near dormitories for long periods of time, said Carl Levredge, director of parking operations.
Staff permit cars should move in and out of lots each day, Levredge said.

An RTD rider sitting in the back seat of a bus on his way to University Village was shot in the foot by an unknown youth Thursday afternoon at the comer of Jefferson Boulevard and Vermont Avenue.
The victim, Brian Johnson, was taken to a hospital by a team of paramedics who arrived shortly after the incident.
Witnesses to the shooting described the youth as black, 16 to 17 years old, five-feet eight inches, approximately 170 lbs., and wearing a red and white striped shirt.

Preparing for his trip to China was, well, difficult. The invitation came only a few weeks before the trip and Pollack had no idea what his itinerary would be when he arrived. He knew he was to play concerts and conduct master classes but received little information about either.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times before leaving for China, Pollack said he also did not know what to expect in the way of pianos, musicians, and concert halls. At the Occidental meeting in 1978, Liu said he had given piano concerts in stadiums holding as many as
80,000 people. As it turned out, Pollack never had to play for a bleacher section as Liu had, but in the Times interview he wondered about the possibility of playing in similar circumstances.
