Behind this issue
The Daily Trojan set a precedent this year—editors for both the fall and spring semesters were women raising the total number of females who have held this position during a 59-year period to 8.
A quick glance down this semester’s staff box will make one quickly realize that there is also a high concentration of females in the top editorial positions of the paper—not only an unusual occurrence for the Daily Trojan, but something which is almost never seen on a metropolitan paper.
It is probably because of the increasing feminism on the Daily Trojan that this special eight-page issue came about. Women in the communication media are extremely alert to the fact that they are in a unique position to further understanding of the feminist movement.
In this issue, we have focussed on the women and the organizations who believe that the role of the female has changed in our society. Women are no longer content to obligingly allow men to take over top positions on the basis that men are supposedly more competent. And with the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by individual states throughout the country now becoming a reality, women’s liberation is no longer only a source of laughter.
This issue was not written in a “burn your bra” state of mind. It was instead compiled with the concern that too few men and women really realize what the equal rights movement is all about. Hopefully, this issue will help clarify some of this misunderstanding.
