This week the construction crew will finish University ave1 nue, then move on to 36th street. Work on all streets will be completed in about a month.

Beauty Flies to New York For
m
Palmolive Finals
by Gary Kreutz
Mrs. Jim Halverson, who, under the maiden name of Bobette Bentley, became SC’s most outstanding coed, Friday was named one of the six prettiest school girls in America. The selection was made as part of the Palmolive Soap Co. contest to find America’s “Most Beautiful School Girl.”
Mr. and Mrs. Halverson are leaving by airplane sometime today for New York where she will compete in the contest finals. She will appear on the Colgate Summer Comedy Hour over NBC-TV Sunday evening (8 p.m. local time, channel 4) at which time the “Most Beautiful School Girl” will be announced., {
Many Plx When word came of her selection, Mrs. Halverson was immediately hustled down to campus by a commercial photographer for campus shots for the contest.
While posing for the shots she told of her good news.
“This is the most wonderful thing yet,” the statuesque blueeyed blonde said. “I’m convinced that I have the most exciting life.”
She’s right, in her four years at SC (she graduated in June), she has piled up a record of accomplishments and nonors as long as your arm.
“I hope my husband can go,” she continued.
Mr. Halverson, an SC graduate in *51, was contacted later by telephone and revealed that he would make the trip with his beautiful wife.
“We’ve been married less than a month and we didn’t have a honeymoon because Bobette had to rehearse for ‘Affairs of State’ (SC summer drama production just concluded). Now we can have a real honeymoon,” he said.
He is employed with the Texas Oil company which granted him a week off so he could make the trip.
“We are really lucking out,” he said. “By the way,” he asked his interviewer, “Do you know when we are leaving?”
Both Halversons were obviously surprised and confused over the unexpected news. Mrs. Halverson did not even know what prizes she will receive back east. She will be awarded a $1000 wardrobe designed for h?r by Jane Engel of New York.
Night Spots
She and her husband will see two Broadway hits during their stay, and will dine at such places as Toot Shor’s, “21,” and the Stork Club.
Four of the six finalists are high school girls. Marquette is the only other college represented.
The other five finalists are Billie Jane Ferguson, senior at Buda High School in Buda, Texas; Joan Cavin, a May graduate Leavenworth High School, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas; Barbara Gombar, junior at Marquette University, she is from Lakewood, Ohio; Lorna Young, graduate of Olympus High School, Salt Lake City; and Mary Beleney Ruff, senior in Dreher High School in Columbia, South Carolina.
Palmolive Girl
All six, of course, will appear on the Sunday evening “Comedy Hour.”
Mrs. Halverson was named “Palmolive Girl of SC” last summer as part of a nationwide advertising campaign, and her picture appeared in national magazine advertising for Palmolive soap. This (Continued on Page 4)
