EN ROUTE TO CONVOCATION CONFRONTATION
Students storm up steps to Commons where talks on convocation were held
Convocation format set
After a week of lack of agreement and controversy over the student-trustee convocation and its format, a spontaneously formed group ot Justin Dart, chairman of the board of trustees. President John Hubbard and six students met and agreed to hold a convocation next Tuesday at noon in Bovard.
The group met when a scheduled meeting on convocation format between Dart. Hubbard. ASSC President Sam Hurst and ASSC vice-presidents Chuck Jones and Tom Levyn was interrupted by a crowd of concerned students which marched from a rally in front of Tommy Trojan to the upstairs Commons Restaurant to gain admittance to the closed meeting.
Dart and Hubbard came outside of the meeting room 10 minutes later to talk to the determined crowd. After about an hour of somewhat loud and emotional discussion between the administrators and the students on the planning of the convocation. Dart turned to Hurst and said he had enough confidence in Hurst to allow him to select students, not necessarily ASSC officials, to sit in on the planning session, one of the main points the crowd of students was driving at.
On Tuesday Dart had announced the board would not participate in yesterday's planned convocation because the trustees were wary of entering into a convocation without a format. Hubbard said the

DART. CAUCUS COMPROMISE
Wild day ends in settlement
By RIVIAN TAYLOR Associate City Editor
Yesterday morning the agenda for the day s events was anything goes, anyone's guess.
There were many givens that could not be ignored, but the way in which they interrelated created probably one of the “heaviest days in recent campus history.
Yesterday was the day which the Caucus of Concerned Students had set for the convocation.
Justin Dart, chairman of the Board of Trustees, had said Tuesday that the trustees would not participate in that convocation because no format had been arranged and the caucus (which had invited the trustees i was not a “recognized student group."
Both the caucus and the ASSC (which voted last week to support the convocation' had decided Tuesday evening to go ahead with plans for the convocation, hoping that the trustees would appear if they saw a significant number of students at a noon rally in front of Tommy Trojan.
Dart was scheduled for a lunch meeting yesterday with President John Hubbard and ASSC officers to arrange a convocation for next week.
But before the day had ended, a rally had grown into a march upon the closed-door meeting on the convocation format, and an hour-long exchange between concerned yet angry students and Dart and Hubbard eventually forced a compromise.
Caucus members, armed with leaflets saying the convocation was still going to take place, arrived on campus around 8 a.m. The ASSC had arranged for tables and microphones to be set up in Bovard and the sound truck from Alice s Restaurant to be stationed outside the auditorium so that if more people came than could be accommodated in the building a sound system for those outside would be provided.
About 10 a.m. three caucus representatives
entered the building to obtain a written statement from the trustees on whether they would participate in the convocation at noon. The trustees refused to issue a written statement, but they verbally said they were not going to take part in the program.
At this point the campus police ordered the sound truck off campus on orders from Dr. Paul Bloland. vice president for Student and Alumni Affairs. A caucus member told the Daily Trojan that Bloland at first told students who questioned this action that the truck was in violation of a university code dealing with sound frequency. but later when the students challenged this point, he said it was an executive decision on his part.
ASSC representatives quickly got portable sound equipment and began urging students to rally around Tommy Trojan.
Between 200 and 300 people did gather and most stayed throughout the hour as about 15 people took turns denouncing the trustees.
The rally was interrupted at about 1:10 p.m. when a caucus member yelled. "The trustees are meeting upstairs. We re going over to talk to them. Enough of this empty rhetoric. "
He got up and started walking toward the commons and most everyone at the rally followed suit.
Dart and Hubbard decided to come out and talk and they were engaged in a heated dialogue with the students for over an hour.
The students. Dart and Hubbard almost found themselves in a shouting match on several occasions. Students asked Dart for a guarantee that all trustees would be at next Tuesday's convocation and Dart refused.
But when Dart turned to Hurst and indicated he would trust Hurst to name students to a convocation committee, the whole tone of the gathering changed.
