Troy Week— no weak end
Troy Week goes into its final stage this weekend with scheduled events ranging from parades to rallies to dances.
At noon today there will be a rally in front of Tommy Trojan.
A parade, scheduled to originate at 8 a.m. at the corner of 28th Street and University Avenue, was officially cancelled by the police. But Joel Rosenzweig, Troy Week chairman, points out that the location is an ideal place for a spontaneous parade, to begin at the previously designated time.
The congregation could then procede toward Tommy Trojan, accompanied by the USC Marching Band and the yell leaders.
At this point the parade would be met by a similarly spirited detachment from the dormitories. Together they would join in on the biggest rally of the year as the annual pre-UCLA bonfire is ignited.
Immediately after this, there will be dancing in the streets as the Original Midnighters and the Bluesberry Jam spread their sounds over the patio of the Student Activities Center.
At the same time the Syndicate of Sound and the Soul Brothers will perform in the Grill.
Tomorrow there is only one function scheduled. Spontaneous post-game rallies on 28th Street are expected, should the event go well.
Sunday night the ASSC Cultural Affairs Committee will continue its Science Fiction Film Series with “White Zombie,” the Bela Lugosi flick that has been termed “the greatest atmospheric horror film ever.” It will screen at 7:30 in Founders Hall 133. Admission is free.
TICKETS IN WILL CALL
Mail order requests for tickets to the Bob Hope Show, which were received after Tuesday will be held at the Sports Arena will call window on the night of the performance. Tickets are still available at $5, and $3. The show will be presented Monday night at the Sports Arena.
Rules for rooters
In order to be admitted to the rooting section at the UCLA game, students must have their ticket, photo ID, and a white shirt.
As the visitors, USC students will be seated on the south (press box) side of the field, and must enter through the gates directly outside tunnel seven.
The gates will open at 9 a.m. However, Dr. Topping has reminded the students who may be planning to rush the gates at that hour that the game does not start until 3 p.m., six hours later.
Student tickets for the Rose Bowl game will be on sale Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday in booths adjacent to the Student Union Building.
Urban Semester to begin third session
Sprawling urban Los Angeles will serve as the laboratory for the third Urban Semester.
An experiment in education held for the first time last spring and summer, the Urban Semester will be offered again from February to June.
Instead of holding formal class sessions with the traditional study outlines, the program places emphasis on group interaction, experimental learning, and individual study.
Frank Tyson, the director of last year’s program, called it “an intense experience for each student who went through it.”
“It was something that each of them really lived every day and night for an entire semester.”
Enrollment for the upcoming session will be limited to 40 students to be selected from USC and other colleges and universities in the Los Angeles area. The selection of participants for the 16-unit, fulltime program will be based on motivation and other standard academic criteria.
Preference will be given to juniors although a limited number of undergraduates from other class levels may be accepted.
Dr. Arthur Atkissen Jr., director of the
Institute of Urban Ecology, under whose auspices the new program will be conducted, says the Urban Semester is intended to provide students with a deeper understanding of space-age urban life. He contends that it can accomplish this goal.
“We surveyed participants in a post-evaluation of the first two Urban Semesters,” Atkissen said. “Both faculty and students who participated found the program to be the most valuable educational experience they had encountered.”
Atkissen said student involvement in evaluating and planning the program will continue as a permanent feature.
“The Urban Semester,” he added, “belongs to the university including both students and faculty. Both groups must be deeply involved in its design and conduct if the program is to succeed.”
The deadline for applying is Dec. 13. Further information about the Urban Semester and application blanks may be obtained from the Institute of Urban Ecology, VKC 347.
There will be two information meetings next week in the Student Activities Center. The first will be Monday at noon, the other Tuesday at 1 p.m.

DT holds essay contest on park ruckus
The Daily Trojan is sponsoring an essay contest as a result of a $50 contribution from an alumnus and his wife.
“How the Alumni Park Incident was a lesson in Support of the American Democratic Tradition” will be the essay topic.
Noel K. Finley, structural engineer, prompted the contest with a letter sent to the Daily Trojan.
“Dear Sir:
“As a graduate of the Engineering School, class of 1952, I was most proud of the reaction of the USC students to the invasion of the campus by the rabble
rousers last week. It prompts me to enclose a check in
the amount of $50 to be put to good use for the benefit of such students.
“Sincerely, Noel K. Finley.”
The essay topic was chosen after consultation with Finley.
“I’ll tell you, I held my head pretty darn high the day after I saw that on the news,” Finley said in a phone interview yesterday.
“I saw how the students there—a group of students—reacted when a bunch of long-haired slobs of the Students for a Democratic Society came on campus and how they just left the campus,” he said.
Three prizes will be awarded to the best student essays. First place will be $35, second $10, and third $5.
Faculty members of the School of Journalism will judge the essays.
All essays are limited to 250 words, must stick to the topic, and must be typed. The deadline will be Dec. 2. The winning essays will be printed in the Daily Trojan.
The essays must comment specifically on the incident in Alumni Park Nov. 14. At that time, a group of students forced a combined SDS and Resistance rally to move off campus to the University Methodist church.
The incident will be investigated by a combined ASSC and dean’s staff committee.
Essays may be sent or delivered to 432 Student Union, Daily Trojan, USC, University Park, Los Angeles. Participants should include their name, year, major, address, and phone number on their essay.
