What you can expect from USC
Soon, you will have finished struggling through the seeming chaos of a new beginning. To all students I offer a warm welcome and to new students, especially, the promise that the real challenges at USC await you. Ours is an intimate academic community, offering unlimited possibilities for intellectual discovery. It is up to you to seek involvement here, to contribute your own creative resources, and thus to gain much of lasting value in your USC years.

Think of a journey. . .the distance to be done the prize to be won. Myriad faces in a sea of experience. New thoughts which burst through in remote corners of your mind. A series of mini-to-maxi events invisibly strung together. Creative disillusionments. Volatile monotonies. The awful learning that you must seek what you will have. Molding an integrity—learning The Game— surviving the contradiction. Moments of cynicism and moments of reverence.

Past freshman women could expect little opportunity for feminist involvement. But in the last two years, vague stirrings of discontent gave way to action, resulting in the formation of the Women's Alliance—an informal coalition of female students, faculty and staff interested in feminist concerns. Women's liberation
is no longer a dirty word and the alliance testifies to the energy of feminism here. We welcome freshman women to experience the sisterhood and warmth making USC a better place for both women and men.

You think Dave and Ricky Nelson's college life in "Ozzie and Harriet" was a fantasy? Maybe, but since you've chosen USC, it wouldn't hurt to watch those re-runs every afternoon. Expect fame, fortune, wild orgies and increasing tuition from USC. I can't promise total delivery, but I'm quite confident about the increasing tuition. And don't forget that Troy lost the Trojan War.

It helps to know these realities: Most of the faculty are friendly and approachable. Take the initiative yourself.
The challenges are unlimited. Seek them out. I have not found a student whose intellectual potential could not be stretched—even strained! Notice the warning signs of your traumas, whether personal or educational. Seek help early. You will leave your imprint on the university as we will on you. Help us to make it mutually beneficial.
