Teach-In: A Dream Come True By STAN METZLER Assistant to Editor David Lang, president of Students for a Democratic society, asked the crowd to gather. “It’s like a dream come true,” he said of Friday’s Vietnam Teach-in. ‘It's the culmination of two years’ hard work.” When it was over, 12 men had presented their views on the war. mostly against it, and perhaps 1.000 students and other interested persons had listened, primarily with enthusiasm. Although the teach-in had been heralded as a balanced presentation, only two events presented viewpoints supporting the American presence in Vietnam. These were the opening talk by Dr. Fred Schwarz, substituting for Dr. William McBernie; and the evening debate, with R. Adm. W. C. Chambliss (ret.) and Dr. John Pournelle of Pepper-dine upholding the war against Congressional peace candidate Larry Sherman and Dr. Joseph Nyomarkay, USC professor. Others speaking against the war were Masamori Kojima. Dr. Isodore Ziferstein, Father William DuBay. David Scott, Gerald Hill, David Lang and Robert Vaughn. Compared to the UCLA Vietnam Teach-In last year, the USC effort was small, but well-organized. It was less spontaneous, less boisterous; but more reasoned, even more balanced. “The precedent has been set,” Lang told the audience. “There will be more teach-ins at USC.” University of Southern California VOL LVIII LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA. TUESDAY, MAY 16. 1967 NO. 123 Vaughn Outlines Four-Step Plan PRO-WAR SPEAKER — Dr. Fred Schwarz, speaking in place of Dr. William McBernie, told the teacc-in crowd that some two million people of Vietnam are deserting Communism. By GREG KISSELMANN Editor Robert Vaughn, actor and politician in-the-making closed Friday’s Vietnam Teach-in with the observation that the only path left open to the United Stales in Vietnam is planned withdrawal and negotiation. and he outlined a four-step plan to replace current American policy. Speaking before a standing-room-only audience in the Student Union lounge. Vaughn said the U.S. must unconditionally terminate bombing of North Vietnam, deescalate the fighting in South Vietnam, recognize the National Liberation Front, and call for a reconvening of the Geneva Conference with the stipulation that it be held in an Asian country. The actor's speech was a point point blast of what he called the underlying assumptions of the Vietnam war. O n America’s “committment” to Southeast Asia: “The Vietnam war is a civil war, and U.S. involvement there is illegal. Our aggression began when we started working with Diem government. When the guerrilla forces saw this, they rose up against the U.S. and asked for the aid of Ho Chi Minh. When they got it, we started calling them the aggressors.’ On the need to stop communism : “Idiology can't be stopped by a gun. . . Are we fighting communism by lying to the American people, killing. paying no heed to international law, and burning homes? If we think we are righteous, were just fooling ourselves.” On the threat of China: ‘‘The facts don’t support the contention that China is bound Anti-Red Speaker Charges Viets Forsake Communism to make war on its neighbors. The Vietnam conflict is staggeringly one-sided. We have troops all over Asia; China does not, so who is the aggressor?” The message of the Refugess Index is clear, Dr. Fred Schwarz told the opening teach-in crowd Friday noon. That nearly 2.000,000 Vietnamese have forsaken their homes, their families and their posessions to flee across a hostile border to the Soutn, he said, is an indictment against Communism to any rational mind. Speaking at the teach-in in place of radio commentator Dr. William McBernie, Dr. Schwarz, director of the Christian Anti-Communism Crusade, acknowledged the American democracy is not a perfect system. “But in this critical hour of human destiny,” he suggested, we should give all aid possible to those who are doing the best they can to preserve liberty for ourselves and the rest of the world.” Bookstore Moves To Temporary Area Remodelling work for the service basis, new bookstore facilities in the The fall booklist, which will Student Union, will force the list required books and theii University Bookstore move to prices, will be available a week temporary quarters at the end before registration, on Sept. 13. of the month. Although he confessed that he had never visited Vietnam himself, Dr. Schwarz also professed to having a direct line of communication with Peking. “Any information I have on the Far East comes directly from Mao Tse Tung, along with an analysis and interpretation,” he said. “This information is sent to me every week, airmail,” he explained, displaying a recent copy of the Peking Review. The magazine has often, he said, presented plans for a Communist world-takeover, with victory in Vietnam a key to this conquest. “The Review presents the Communists’ point of view—their beliefs and their programs,” he explained. “And I'm naive enough to take them seriously.” On the fight for Vietnamese freedom: “Whose freedom are we fighting for? The absentee landlords? Ky? The South Vietnamese soldiers? — 124,- 000 of them deserted last year. Are we fighting so the Vietnamese can vote for a freely-elected government? Only the military junta can have nominees.” On the fight to save face: “We've talked peace while escalating the war —- our face has already been lost. Change is the only worthy course open to us now.”
