Former USC Student Criticizes How L.A. Teaches Negro Pupils
By <iRE<; KIESELMANN
Robert Kendall is a former USC student who rocks boats. One year ago, he jolted a pretty big one — the Los Angeles School System—and left it. if not floundering, in desperate need of repairs in the academic drydocks.
It seems that Kendall, exactor. ex-ministry student and still high school teacher, wrote a book on how Los Angeles “educates" its Negro children and the conditions under which it makes its instructors work.
Two-Year’s Work
“White Teacher in a Black School.” Kendall's book, was the result of two years of frustration and disgust accumulated while teaching in two predominately Negro high schools in the area: disgust over the orgies, mara-juana parties and gang fights that occur daily in the schools and frustration over administrative acquiescence to the proceedings.
"The education of Negroes is bein? stifled by an oxtremti progressive outlook I hat expects nothing of the student and. in turn, receives nothing.” said Kendall in an illlri view
Ha explained that the grade system at the two schools w'here he taught involved giving out passing

marks whether or not the student deserved them.
“This did nothing for the ;Negro, but it helped Los Angeles preserve its reputation for good schools,” he said.
Treatment of the faculty by principals and other administrators was a particular sore point with Kendall.
“I was never treated so shabbily in my experience as
teacher. Rest breaks weie almost non-exiatant, the food was bad and we had only 20 minute lunch hours, often coupled simultaneously with
business meetings," he recounted.
Kendall said he was sworn at so often by students and administrators alike that he began taking the curses down in a little “black book.”
“F i r s t, a student would swear at me — maybe for a bad grade — and then, when I attempted to discipline him (or her), the principal would swear at me for being too rough on the kid.”
He said school officials made no attempt to acquaint pupils with standards of right and wrong for fear of “injuring student psyches or offending the Negro community.”
On this last point, however. Kendall found evidence to the contrary.
Must Earn Grades “Most Negro parents wanted their kids to work harder and the students, once they realized they were going to have to earn their grades, respected you for it,” he said.
Dmring his stay at USC in 1956-57, Kendall took courses in I plecommunications and cinema. He later transferred to L.A. State w'here he re-cieved his B.A.
His book, which has gone as nigh as Sui on tho best ceiier charts, ic published in hardback by Devin-Adair Co. and in paperback by Henry jRegnery Co.
