Commuters have already discovered two “street closed” signs and another avenue of travel cutoff by a parking lot. ■ _ To date, 36th Place and 36th Street are being, cutoff at McClintock Avenue by way of sidewalks and curbs. A parking lot at Hoover Street has effectively shutoff 35th Street to through traffic. The'changes are part of USC’s Master Plan and are designed to give students more parking space, according to business manager Elton Phillips. No Through Traffic Phillips said that all cross streets from 34th Street to Exposition Boulevard, bordered by McClintock Avenue and Hoover Street, will eventually be cut off to through traffic. Hoover Boulevard is also scheduled to be closed from Exposition Boulevard to Jefferson Boulevard and marked off for additional parking spaces. The closing was approved by the Los Angeles City Council because of the vast number of students crossing Hoover Boulevard each day from the dormitories. If all plans are carried out. Phillips said that there would probably be more than 3,380 parking spaces for the returning university population in September, compared to 3,035 at the same date last year. University Owned Property in the areas to be closed is or will be owned by the university. Houses on the closed streets will be vacated, although Hoover Boulevard itself will not be vacated. Phillips explained that entrances to parking areas on the west side of the campus will be through Hoover Street, from either Exposition Boulevard or 34th Street. The new arrangement will enable USC to provide more parking with fewer attendants. He added that all faculty members and all students who have pre-registered, will receive maps and an explanation of the new parking system through the mail SURVEYORS AT WORK — Much of the work involved in revamping campus parking is not muscle work, it is paper and pencil work. Such is the job of the surveyors, who are kept busy marking off curbs, sidewalks and parking lots. FINISHED PRODUCT - Men, muscle, paper and pencil combined to complete the parking lot cutting off 35th Street at Hoover Stree/.. Eventually, all streets from 34th Street to Exposition Boulevard will be cut off to through traffic. Hoover Boulevard, after action by the Los Angeles City Coyncil, will also be closed to traffic.
