Pi Beta Phi and Sigma Phi Epsilon sang along t-o a lively rendition of popular TV themes to capture the three-foot sweepstakes “Tommy” from 15 other campus groups at the ninth annual Songfest Saturday night in the Hollywood Bowl.
The largest crowd in Songfest history—more than 10,000 persons—forgot the chilly night air to warm up to the musical jibes at Margie, Soupy Sales and Mr. Ed, capped by a sparkling takeoff on the popular Mitch Miller “Sing Along” theme.
The 10,000-plus audience sat through three hours of competition to see last year’s sweepstakes winner Sigma Chi team with Kappa Kappa Gamma to win the mixed division trophy with the comic “Zero Minus One” description of life in a fallout shelter
Alpha Delta Pi and Alpha Tau Omega’s whip-cracking “Circus Time” took first place in the production division, while dental fraternity Delta Sigma Delta took “Lizzie Borden” to the top in the small group division ancl unchallenged Chi Omega and the NROTC sailed home in the women’s and men’s divisions respectively.
The show stopper, however, w'as the standout “TV Special.” Nina Smith, director of the sweepstakes winner, led her entry through the standard TV themes with her back to the audience before whirling around for the final song to face the throng sporting a Mitch-type beard and strut, signalling a thundering audience ovation.
Judges Nelson Riddle, John Scott Trotter, Lionel Newman, Frank Comstock and Dick Noel presented the gold division trophies to the winners, assisted by Songfest co-chairman Vivian von Hagen. Noel pinch-hitted for scheduled judge Jud Conlon, who was unexpectedly called out of town. Songfest Chairman Bill Heeres read a telegram of apology from Dimitri Tiomkin, sixth scheduled judge whose recent auto accident prevented him from attending.
The spirited evening of satire and fantasy, hosted by Music Dean Raymond Kendall, reached its high point with the grand finale led by guest conductor Elmer Bernstein.
