Mermen Practice for Return Match With Strong Bears
Still groggy from the 12-2 pasting handed them Saturday by the University of California, the varsity water polo team yesterday afternoon went through a fast and furious 45 minute practice session as they grimly pointed toward a grudge victory over the Bears In next Saturday’s
return battle with the Northerners.
BITTKE NOT SATISFIED
Indicating that he was not at all satisfied with his charges’ poor showing against the Bears, Coach Ed Bittke revamped the starting lineup in an unexpected move that affected the position of almost every man on the squad. Sophomore Bud Townsend, fastest man on the team, was promoted from the second string to the varsity center-back spot.
Jim Humphries was moved from guard to forward; Dick Anderson from forward to guard; and Neil Kohlase from center-back to a guard position. Dwight Crum was shifted to the second string.
In yesterday’s scrimmage Bittke departed radically from his regular practice routine. Guards Anderson and Kohlase played most of the game in front of the forwards and consequently the goalie faced a constant barrage from a four-gun attack. Dick Krauss, who had plunked in six of his team’s eight goals in last week’s frays with Stanford and Cal, again sparked the first-stringer’s scoring punch. TEAM DOES WELL
Discouraging as the Berkeley tilt was, the Trojans played their best game of the season against Stanford. The veteran Cards bewildered the locals in the first half by breaking down the guards, but in the last two periods, the Trojans spotted their opponents to two points and rang up five counters for themselves. Bittke is confident that his boys will win if they play the same sort of game next Saturday against Cal.
