Splash | Freshmen jump right into the start of the semester Killer of USC basketball player faces life in prison By CAT HERINE LYONS Daily Trojan A 20-year-old Baton Rouge man was convicted Aug. 17 of killing USC basketball star Ryan Francis in 2006. DeAnthony Ford, found guilty of committing second-degree mur-der and aggravated battery, now faces life in prison without parole . The murder charge carries a manda-tory life sentence under Louisiana state law. Formal sentencing will conclude on Sept. 17. “I’m just glad it’s over with and justice was served,” said Paulette Francis, Ryan’s mother. “I’m glad he got his dues, and now we can rest. Ryan can rest in peace and I can rest in peace.” Francis, who was USC’s start-ing point guard as a freshman in the 2005-2006 season, was shot to death while driving in a car with friends early in the morning on May 13, 2006. Ford allegedly pulled up next to the car and opened fire, intending to hit another passenger. Francis, who was seated in the rear passenger’s seat, was the only oc-cupant hit by the bullets. He later died at a nearby hospital, the Daily Trojan reported last year. After a weeklong trial in Baton Rouge, jurors found Ford responsi-ble for a shooting on May 11, 2006 that left no one injured and for the shooting two days later that killed Francis, said Kurt Wall, the Baton Rouge assistant district attorney who oversaw the case. “The person who Ford was ac-cused of shooting at on May 11 was in the backseat with Ryan Francis Ryan Francis was USC’s starting point guard when he was shot in May 2006. The shooting occurred at about 5:15 p.m. at Vermont Street and 36th Place, said Los Angeles Police Depart-ment Sgt. Ed Clark, the watch commander for the South-west Division. Department of Public Safety Capt. John Thomas confirmed its location at the Exposition Park-Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Regional Branch Library. Two males witnessed the shooting and brought the victim, whose name was not released, to Gate 6 on campus to seek help, Thomas said. . According to an e-mail from DPS, the shots were fired at two juveniles running from the location. The shooters fled on foot. Clark said LAPD has some leads but has not appre-hended a suspect. Clark did not provide a possible mo-tive, but said the shooting was gang related. An eyewitness in the Denney Research Building said he saw LAPD officers interviewing a non-student teen-ager at the scene after the shooting. LAPD officers were stationed at the library until around 8 p.m. to escort staff members to their car. “The librarians didn’t feel safe after the shooting,” LAPD Officer Tim Bradley said. Clark would not say where the victim, who Thomas said lives near campus, was taken. Local hospitals were contacted, but neither his location nor condition was con-firmed.
