Caro delivered the Dennis F. and Brooks Holt Distinguished Lecture at Town and Gown touching on his most recent biography of President Lyndon B. Johnson and the role of power in government. “I never think of my books as just the biography of ... Lyndon B. Johnson,” Caro said. “When I started writing books, I never had an interest in writing a biography simply to record the life of one person. I try to use the life of a great man to explore the forces that shape his time, particularly political power.” The biography, Lyndon B. Johnson: The Passage of Power, is the fourth book in a five-volume series titled The Years of Lyndon Johnson. on the life of the 36th president of the United States. To Caro, political power is a key force in shaping contemporary social issues, just as it was at the time of the Johnson presidency. “We’re in a democracy, so ultimately, power comes from the usg By jordyn holman Daily Trojan After deliberations that began at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday and concluded around 3:30 a.m. Wednesday, the Undergraduate Student Government elections commission determined both presidential tickets had committed violations of the elections code. Matt Arkfeld and Alex Cascante were cited for not using the “Vote On” logo on their campaign shirts, the elections and recruitment committee wrote in its decision. USG Election Code article VII, section D2 stipulates that all candidates are required to display a “Vote On” logo on their campaign shirts. Arkfeld and Cascante were also cited for violating Election Code article VI, sections A, B and C for distributing campaign photographs online during the research period, which is prior to Feb. 4 at midnight, when campaigning officially began. Christian Kurth and Ryan Park were cited for violating article II, section A3 and article IX, section C by communicating with a currently seated USG member, who was copied on an email between supporters. They were also cited for violating article IX Sections E and F by implying that Program Board, the Black Student Assembly and USG endorsed the candidates in using USG’s pin maker to make campaign pins and using USG’s oversized Tommy Trojan logo. Jim Gianopulos joined the School of Cinematic Arts’ Board of Councilors Wednesday. Gianopulos also serves as a member of the Motion Picture & Television Fund’s Board, a trustee of the American Film Institute and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors. Gianopulos joins many notable board members, including George Lucas, Jeffrey Katzenberg, Sidney Poitier, Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, according to Variety. “Throughout his career Jim has always been dedicated to finding and supporting the next visionary filmmaker or technology, and that fits right in with our goal as a board,” Frank Price, chair of the SCA’s Board of Councilors, told several media outlets in a statement. As a member of the SCA board, Gianopulos will aid the school in fundraising efforts, development and planning. Gianopulos, who attended Boston University for his undergraduate degree and both Fordham University and New York University’s schools of law, began his career as an entertainment attorney before working at Paramount and Columbia Pictures. As the chairman and CEO of Fox, Gianopulos oversees the production of feature films and television. Fox has released huge box office hits including Titanic and Avatar with Gianopulos at its helm. While in his current position, he has also taken an active role in establishing a relationship between the entertainment industry and Silicon Valley. Gianopulos, who currently lives in Los Angeles with his family, participates in philanthrophic work, including for the National Entertainment Advisory Council for the Anti-Defamation League, the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Help Group.
