By JEREMY BEECHER, JOANNA LIN and COURTNEY WILLIS Daily Trojan USC students and faculty and student journalists around the nation expressed concern and shock Wednesday after the administration said it would block the Dally Trojan’s editor in chief-elect from taking office. Zach Fox resigned as editor in chief Tuesday after Michael L. Jackson, vice president of Student Affairs, said he would withhold the re-elected editors application from Media Board approval “It just seems to me it tromps all over the reason for having a student newspaper in the first place,” said John Kotler, professor of media law at the Annenberg School of Journalism. “How can you have a student voice with the students being throttled by the administration? ... The (faculty) Fve spoken with are outraged.” “It’s a newspaper produced by the students for the university, and it should be seen that way,” said Felix F. Gutierrez, journalism professor and former editor in chief of the student newspaper at California State University, Los Angeles. Koder said he and other faculty members have asked Michael Parks, director of the School of Journalism, to put the issue on the faculty meeting agenda Monday. Administrators cited problems with Fox's application as the reason for preventing him from taking office. Fox’s application did not fit the current job description for editor in chief, said Lori White, associate vice president of Student Affairs. “If you apply for a job, you apply for the job as it is.... If Zach had wanted to apply for the current job of editor in chief, we would have forwarded his application to the Media Board,” she said. Powell entered the NCAA Football 07 video game tournament using his USCard from fall 2005. The official rules state tournament participants must be enrolled students at one of the 16 participating universities, regardless of at which school they competed. “Although the student did present a student ID, he was not registered at the University of Southern California for this semester,” according to a statement issued by EA Sports. “Al- though the winner of the tournament was a former student on deferment, by not being a registered student (he violated) the ruling.” After being notified of his disqualification, Powell tried to claim he was a current student at San Diego State University, also a participating university, which would have qualified him for the tournament finals as USC’s champion, since he competed at USC. But both the Daily Trojan and EA Sports confirmed that Powell is not a student at SDSU. Powell would have received an all-expenses-paid trip to the Citrus Bowl in Miami to compete in the tournament finals against the winners from the other universities for a $10,000 grand prize. At the original tournament at USC Nov. 15, Powell claimed to be a fifth-year senior majoring in communication. In a phone interview Nov. 19, Powell admitted he had not attended classes at USC since fall 2005. He claimed to have transferred from Santa Monica College and taken communication and business courses at USC for two semesters, but he could not recall the course names or numbers, or the names of his professors. 'T had to take a break from school to take this job,’’ Powell said over the phone regarding his job as a sales representative for the Pepsi Bottling Group. “It’s good money.” . Powell has not returned ariy phone calls since that interview. By DIYA CHACKO Daily Trojan ' The Grill in downstairs Commons has closed after a Los Angeles County health inspector found an infestation of bugs in one of the walls of the cafeteria Wednesday. After finding the bugs, the inspector gave The Grill, which includes La Salsa, Rice Garden and Trattoria Italiana, a B rating. L.A. County Department of Health Services regulations required the cafeteria to close until the area is sanitized. Donald Ranasinghe, TrojanHospitality director of operations, said it is TrojanHospitality’s responsibility to rectify the situation. “Bugs in the facility constitute immediate closure,” Ranasinghe said. “We are going to have a reinspection in 48 hours.” Ranasinghe said the infestation could have occurred because of moisture collected in the structural wall. The inspector found a bug when she peeled back the wall between the service elevator and Tlie Grill’s kitchen. John Thacker, director of TrojanHospitality, said the age of the building also could have been a factor in the infestation. “It’s time for us to renovate the building with a more trend-forward service offering,” Thacker said. “Were in contact with (the USC Department of Environmental Health and Safety), who will assist us in follow-up work.” I see INSECTS, page 16 I
