The audience waited expectantly as 96-year-old Julius Shulman was helped across the stage.
For many, having a conversation with the architectural photographer — whose works span eight decades — was going to be a rare treat.
“I see some empty seats; I'll go back,” Shulman said, as he settled into his chair, and the crowd erupted in applause and laughter. “This is a bit like a rock concert — I pretend I know something about those — because you’re paying to hear the star sing songs you already know."
“Modernism’s Auteur: LA. THrough. the Lens of Julius Shulman,” the first lecture in the annual five-part Sidney D. Gamble Lecture Series, was held Nov.
4 at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena.
The lecture took place in the college’s Ahmanson Auditorium, which seats about 430.

At the beginning of the year, Lisa Turner, a sophomore majoring in biological sciences who lives on the 14th floor of Webb Tower, said she had “a ton” of gnats in her apartment. “We’ve kind of killed them, but they’ve been multiplying.
