Greg Hosharian, vocalist and keyboard player in Vendetta, performs a song commemorating the 1915 Armenian genocide Tuesday in Hahn Plaza. Genocide remembered Memorial: Pictures, music and speakers help students commemorate the 1915 Armenian genocide By MELANIE ZAHAROPOULOS Contributing Writer Sounds of techno drifted from a nearby table as Mamikon Arupynyn took the stage, dressed in black from head to toe under the glare of a hot noon sun. Lifting his duduk, the flute he has played for 30 years, to his lips he filled Hahn plaza with a mournful, aching melody. The small crowd gathered near Tommy Trojan fell silent Someone turned the techno down. Passers-by stopped to listen and stayed to observe the Armenian Student Association display commemorating the 87th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The genocide, recognized by the state of California but not by the United States federal government. The Armenian Genocide was a systematic destruction of the Armenian people by the Ottoman Empire government during its breakup from 1915 to 1923, according to the Armenian National Institute. Many states and countries recognize that 1.5 million Armenians died at the hands of the Turks, although the number is dis- puted by the Turkish government. Today, the Orthodox Christian nation of Armenia is a country of about 3.3 million tucked between Turkey, Iran and the southern Caucus region. Photos of dead children and old posters asking for aide in the Near East were displayed along with copies of dispatches from Ottoman military commanders. Speakers denounced the lack of U.S. recognition for the atrocities committed during World War I and called on Armenians to fight for world recognition. This substantiates the commitments made by several senators during elections to raise the visibility of campus media. Members of Senate and Program Board held development meetings for several weeks before Saturday’s budget meeting, but vice president Lauren Geissler was forced to adjourn the meeting prematurely after quorum was lost. Senate treasurer Josh Martin was not apt to hear out last-minute concerns with the budget “If there are issues with the budget, they should have been brought up already," Martin said. Jenny Lorch, Senate’s University Residential Student Community representative, proposed both amendments. The first amendment was stipulated that Senate must pass a resolution changing the title of Commuter Activities Program president to director of Commuter Activities Program in order to consider it a paid position. Hasttie Sanjar was confirmed as the Commuter Activities Program president at the meeting after the issue was tabled last week. Sanjar is charged with starting a program for commuters as what URSC is for residents. The URSC president is paid out of the organization’s budget but does not receive a salary from Senate. Although Sanjar will receive a salary from Senate this year, the organization will not pay the succeeding president’s salary, as the Commuter Activities Program will be considered a separate entity. The second amendment stipulated that Senate and Program I see Budget, page 18 I Labor Letter from officials asks students to think about purpose of unionization By ESME BERMUDEZ Contributing Writer As a group of about 10 graduate students continue a 7-month-long struggle to establish a teaching assistants union, USC administration is responding by sending a letter urging all graduate students to closely examine the purpose of such a union. Graduate students supporting unionization began distributing authorization cards in September informing other graduate students about the benefits of having the United Auto Workers (UAW), a union the students chose to represent them as a collective'voice.
