Infant body discovered near the 2-9 dumpsters
City and county officials are investigating the infant's cause and time of death.
By STEVEN CHEN
Stall Writer
The body of an abandoned infant boy was found in a cardboard box by two dumpsters in the back of the 29th Street Caft, said Detective Moses Castillo of the Los Angeles Police Department Juvenile Division, Abused Child Unit.
Paramedics on the scene determined the baby had recently been delivered and was dead when officers arrived on the scene, according to a
statement released by the LAPD.
Officials are still investigating the cause of death and whether the baby was already dead when abandoned.
"The baby did not appear to have any sort of trauma," said Sara Faden, an officer at the media relations section of the LAPD. “The umbilical cord was still attached, and the baby was full-term."
The baby appeared to be white or Hispanic, according to the release.
An autopsy is planned for Wednesday or Thursday morning and, depending on whether toxicology tests are ordered, results could be released immediately or in four to sue weeks, said an official at the coroner’s office.
The Department of Public Safety is currently working with LAPD in the
investigation. DPS is considering the possibility that a student abandoned the baby, said Capt. Gloria Graham, captain of operations.
An anonymous male called in the dead infant to police around 12:30 a.m. Mon3ay from a phone at the Ralphs supermarket located on Vermont Avenue and Adams Boulevard, according to the release.
In 1997, Linda Chu. then a 20-year-old business major living in Century Apartments, was sentenced to 10 years in prison for killing her newborn and dropping her into a trash chute at Century.

The Los Angeles Archdiocese announced in a statement that new allegations of abusive conduct, including one dating back to the 1970s, have been brought against Rev. William Messenger, a priest who stepped down last spring from his former position as head of the Our Savior Catholic Center at USC.
The Archdiocese is leading an ongoing investigation of the complaints with the hired help of former FBI agents, said Tod Tamberg, director of media relations for the Los Angeles Catholic archdiocese.
If true, the most serious new complaint would involve a minor at the time of the alleged abuse, dating back to Messenger’s first assignment.
These are allegations; this is not anything that has been proved. Father Messenger has firmly denied all the allegations," Tamberg said. “We’re still looking at what this complaint entails, whether there is any credibility to it,'-Tamberg said.
