USC student arrested in infant's death LAPD arrested 21-year-old Holly Ashcraft Tuesday night after police found the infant Monday near the 29th St. Cafe. By KARA NICHOLS Staff Writer The Los Angeles Police Abused Child Unit, arrested a 21-year-old USC student Tuesday on suspicion of murdering the newborn boy found in a dumpster early Monday morning, according to the Los Angeles Police Department Holly Ashcraft is being held at the Los Angeles County Jail with bail set at $1 million. Ashcraft abandoned her baby in a cardboard box inside a dumpster at the rear of the 29th Street Cafe, said Cpt. Anita Ortega of the LAPD. The infant was born alive and there is no indication the baby had been killed before being put into the box, Ortega said. Police responded to the scene around 12:30 a.m. Monday. LAPD thinks the baby died from a lack of medical attention and suffocation, Ortega said. The umbilical cord was still attached, she said. The coroner's report will be released in about 30 days, she said. There is no doubt the infant found is Ashcraft’s child, Ortega said. Ashcraft refused to talk with police. "She did not have any conversation with us whatsoever," Ortega said. Ashcraft dropped her architecture major and was pursuing a degree in fine arts, according to friends. She is from Montana.
