fcilLVTRO.il Student Newspaper oj the University of Southern California Since 1912 www.dailytrojan.com February 23, 2006 IFC cuts ties to Greek assembly Fraternity presidents voted Tuesday to remove IFCfrom the Greek Student Assembly. By TOREY VAN 00T Staff Writer Interfraternity Council President Randy Herrel announced Wednesday that IFC has withdrawn its support of the Greek Student Assembly. IFC council presidents voted in a closed session Tuesday to remove their council from the assembly. GSA is a division of Program Board responsible for allocating funds for events hosted by organizations within the Greek community. According to its Web site, GSA's mission is to promote interaction between the five councils and the non-Greek community. GSA Director Talia Warren addressed IFC earlier in the meeting to raise awareness about GSA and ask for support “We seek to be an autonomous body. If we lose the GSA. it will not be good to sav the least,” she said. "The ramifications will be great to Greek life if there is no GSA.” Herrel wrote in an e-mail to the presidents of the five Greek councils that the decision was based on “the poor organization of Greek Week and lack of potential of the organization as a whole.” Herrel said that after attending the GSA meeting, he questioned how productive and successful Greek Week would be, as well as how it would reflect on IFC as a community and the direction of GSA. “One of the things that shocked me was that (Warren) had planned (Greek Week) all herself," he said. Warren said IFC has forfeited its right to vote and receive GSA funding. GSA currently receives $10,000 from Program Board to allocate to philanthropic and social events proposed by Greek organizations and to fund GSA-sponsored programs. Organizations requesting funding submit proposals to the executive board. Warren said GSA grants funding to proposals that support the assembly's mission. GSA officers Steve Houchin, Mike Green and Rob Hughes will give up their positions on the board as part of the decision, Warren said. “I think it speaks volumes about IFC that they are the only council that has left GSA not once, but twice now,” she said. "It's laughable to me that one of IFCs goals is to increase unity between the councils.” “(IFC) has no intentions of disassociating with any of the other Greek organizations," Herrel said. Herrel said the presidents of all five councils meet twice a month with Greek advisers to maintain communication and plan events involving the entire tireek community. “(GSA is) an inefficient way of getting all five councils together. Attendance is poor (and) not all councils are represented to my knowledge,” he said. IFCs actions come at a time when Senate is considering cutting GSA from Program Board. The Student Programming Fee Control Board recommended that Senate cut GSA funding from the 2006-2007 budget. Although Senate has not delivered a final decision, Warren said Senate representatives feel GSA is an ineffective use of funds.
