New dean an unlikely accountant Profile: Former professor attractedby reputation, help from former chairs BY JOHN IRWIN Contributing Writer Randolph Beatty had never taken an accounting class while he was a student at the University of Illinois, until one of his friends wanted to meet a young woman enrolled in one. His friend didn’t want to take the class alone, so he asked Beatty to keep him company. While Beatty had no particular interest in the subject, he had free time, and enrolled anyway. His friend never met the woman, but three decades later, Beatty is the dean of USCs Leventhal School of Accounting. Beatty was appointed to the Alan Casden chair in the summer, after serving as a professor of accounting at Southern Methodist University’s Edwin L Cox School of Business. “Its pretty clear that he is very qualified." said James Menegold, associate dean of the Leventhal School. “He's very well-rounded." Beatty also brings a solid academic reputation and a vitality that will enhance the school in the future, Manegold added. When Beatty enrolled in his first accounting class, he was a math major, but soon saw that accounting was a practical way to apply his knowledge of math. “Accounting is a mature of conceptual and real world applications," Firey spirit Cooking up a storm. His new found discovery of accounting led him to earn a master’s in accounting in 1976. As a graduate student, Beatty discovered that he enjoyed teaching in a classroom setting, which led him to pursue a doctorate. In 1982, he earned a doctorate after discovering that he enjoyed research. In the process, Pisano has also established herself as a leader marked by her dedication to personal relationships. Last week, Pisano announced that she is leaving USC after nearly a decade to become the director and president of the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. She begins her job Nov. 1. While Pisanos new job is only across Exposition Boulevard, Washington said she will still miss the boss she's developed a personal relatipnship with. The concern Pisano showed during Washington’s pregnancy was no surprise, she said. “Most people don’t care, but she was here," said Washington, the assistant vice president of civic and community relations. “She wouldn’t have missed it for the world.” Pisano was interested in the museum post because, like USC, the goal is to educate visitors by telling compelling and interesting stories.
