Thematic Option offers new minor
Interdisciplinary humanities and society minor expands on themes of core TO classes.
By ANNA JEWETT
Staff Writer
The Thematic Option program now offers a new interdisciplinary minor, titled the humanities and society minor, composed of a broad range of electives that taken together cultivate an in-depth understanding of culture and society within the humanities.
Beginning this semester, students can take a variety of traditional liberal arts courses without being locked into any one department, said Robin Romans, director of Thematic Option.
While the humanities and society minor was designed with TO students in mind, it is open to all interested students, he said.
In sum it requires a total of 26 units. However, many TO students will be able to complete it with fewer units since CORK 102 is included in the total as a prerequisite.
“Students have been asking for a program like this," Romans said.
For many honors students, thematic option classes are completed during the sophomore year.
"Students want to keep the intellectual community going," Romans said. “This can be done through the (humanities and society) minor."
Romans also said that for the university the humanities and society minor was something different. In the past, USC has not offered

The Department of Public Safety and the LosAngeles Police Department launched Operation Group Initiative For Theft-Prevention today, a program that will flood the USC community with informative notices on preventing car and residential burglary theft over the winter recess.
From Dec. 18 to Jan. 11 last year, 15 residential burglaries, 41 auto burglaries and 10 stolen vehicles were reported, said Lt. Gloria Graham, head of the DPS crime prevention unit
This is a real problem and this is how (DPS and LAPD will) tackle it together," Graham said.
DPS and LAPD aim to reduce these numbers by 25 percent this year through Operation GIFT., Graham said.
“It's a risk we're taking," Graham said. “We decided to put ourselves out there and make a difference."
DPS will spearhead the program in partnership with LAPD.
“In a nutshell, what they are trying to do is promote awareness," said

With his mind on football and football on his mind, hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg surprised the No. 1 USC Trojan football team Tuesday evening and joined in on its practice.
Clad from head to toe in a cardinal warm-up suit and number 213, the Long Beach rapper and long-time Trojan fan traded in his cardinal-and-gold-laced white All-Star shoes for a pair of cleats and ran drills with the offense and defense.
“I came to coach and ended up bging a player," Snoop said in an intervijw with the Daily Trojan. “I turned into a player's coach and a coach’s player."
Filming a segment for ‘Stand In,” an MTV celebrity surprise show, which has included former Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry teaching an American foreign policy class, Snoop walked into the team's pre-practice meeting and joined in on a rap with USC corner-
back Eric Wright.
Visibly enthused by the rapper’s presence on the field, the team shouted his name as they jogged away from their stretching exercises, where Snoop overlooked the team with USC offensive coordinator Norm Chow.
Snoop, who named former USC
tailbacks Marcus Allen and Charles White as his all-time favorites said he was particularly excited to see players from his hometown, such as running back Hershel Dennis and safety Darnell Bing.
“I love seeing the Long Beach I see Snoop page 111
