wirw.dailytrojan.com Celebrities rally voters Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal visit USC to film a segment for the Oprah Winfrey Show. By KARA NICHOLS Staff Writer Jake Gyllenhaal, from "Donnie Darko," and Maggie Gyllenhaal, from “Mona Lisa Smile," made a surprise trip to USC late Monday afternoon to film a segment for The Oprah Winfrey Show promoting how easy it is to register to vote. Along with representatives from Declare Yourself, a non profit, non partisan campaign designed to get youth involved in politics, Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal asked students to either register to vote or, if registered, to sign a promise to Winfrey that they would vote in the upcoming presidential election on Nov. 2. Both Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal said they were pleasantly surprised by the number of students who said they were already registered to vote. Young people will have an important impact on the election, Maggie Gyllenhaal said. Jake Gyllenhaal said that everyone should vote “because, it’s a sad time when people have to ask why people should vote.” Declare Yourself set up a booth in front of the Student Union where students could register to vote. Maggie andJakeGyllenhaal brought unregistered students to the booth or referred them to www.declareyourseif. com to register. The siblings went to various places on campus, including Lyon’s Center, Norris Theatre and Tommy Trojan, and the Alpha Chi Omega chapter house. “It's hard not to be happy when Jake Gyllenhaal swings by to say hi," said I see Vote, page 111 Rachel Elias i Daily Trojan Celebrity vote. By MEAGAN RUEGG Contributing Writer Some antidepressant medications might increase suicidal thoughts and actions among patients younger than age 18 and will soon come with warning labels that alert patients to possible side effects, according to a statement released by the Food and Drug Administration last Thursday. In an FDA Advisory Committee meeting on September 13 and 14, the American Psychiatric Association told the administration that data from 23 pediatric trials involving nine drugs indicated that antidepressants had increased suicidality in pediatric patients. The APA recommended further research and disclosure of potential side effects. The FDA said it had already begun working on new warning labels to be included with all prescriptions along with the study results. No studies have found that the drugs cause increased suicidal behavior in adults, so the new information should affect few USC students taking the medications, said Dr. Bradford King, director of USC Student Counseling Services. Antidepressants affect children differently than adults because children's bodies are different; they have more trouble following directions and participating in therapy is generally not their decision, King said.
