Suspect arrested in assault
Police link sexual assault suspect to attack in Harris Hall earlier this semester as well as other attacks in Rampart district.
By KRISTIN MAYER
Staff Writer
A suspect charged with assaulting a female student in the first floor women's bathroom at Harris Hall, in the School of Architecture, on Oct. 26 is now in Los Angeles Police Department custody.
The male perpetrator grabbed a woman from behind and struggled with the victim until another female entered the restroom, Department of Public Safety Chief Aaron Graves said last month.
LAPD detained and apprehended two male suspects, but released them later that day, said Lt. Gloria Graham, head of the DPS Crime Prevention Unit.
She said the forensics team was able to grab one fingerprint from the bathroom crime scene.
LAPD arrested a suspect for committing several sexual assaults in the Rampart division of LAPD during the month since the Harris Hall incident.
“The fingerprint found in the bathroom positively matched the fingerprints of the suspect in custody for committing the Rampart assaults,"
Graham said.
The victim also positively identified the suspect, Graham said.
The characteristics of the attacks and physical descriptions of suspects from the Rampart assaults matched the incident in Harris Hall, Graham said.
LAPD automatically cross-referenced the fingerprint through an FBI database and pulled up another arrest record in Santa Barbara County. Graham said.
The arrest record listed similar assaults in Santa Barbara County.
The suspect had given a false name when arrested, Graham said.
Last Wednesday LAPD filed charges on the suspect. They presented their case to the district attorney’s office, which determined that there was enough evidence to charge the individual with the crime, Graham said.
LAPD cannot release any information regarding the assaults or arrest while the district attorney’s office is building its case, said Lt Felicia Hall in the sexual assault division of LAPD.
The district attorney’s office must be the ones to release the information to protect LAPD's case and the victims.
The Deputy District Attorney in charge of the case, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Army gives $100 million contract
USC's Institute for Creative Technology received the funding to help create new means of training troops.
By ALICIA ANDERSON
Contributing Writer
USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies was awarded a $100 million contract by the U.S. Army on Nov. 20, to continue its development of leadership and decision-making tools for the military.
This is the largest contract that USC has ever received. The University originally partnered with the Army in 1999 to create new technology for the troops.
"It’s extremely exciting and noteworthy,' said Cornelius Sullivan, vice provost for research at USC.
The contract is important because
it shows the extraordinary work previously done by ICT in developing training tools for the Army, he said.
ICT has been instrumental in the past because it created computer simulations based on game platforms. which have helped to support the military's position in the Middle East.
The contract will be used by ICT to create more computer based

Student Senate President W.
Joe DeMiero wasn’t at the weekly Senate meeting Tuesday night. It was the last meeting of the semester, but DeMiero had a previous engagement — he was running
the sound for a performance by the Thornton Vocal Jazz Ensemble at Alfred Newman Recital Hall.
He's not a member of the group anymore — he used to be before he was president — but he offered to help out backstage. With no fanfare or recognition. DeMiero helped the vocalists sound their best and enter-
tain their audience to the fullest.
His role in Senate, believe it or not, isn't all that different
“It’s my style to work a little more behind the scenes,” DeMiero said of his leadership style. “I’d rather work with senators to author a resolution instead of authoring one myself.”
This year's Senate hasn’t been about DeMiero. For that matter, it hasn’t even been about this year’s Senate. Instead, it has been about last year’s Senate and those Senates yet to come.
The past
When DeMiero and running mate Tessie Shih took office six months ago, they inherited a Senate that had be running without executive leadership for nearly a month and was under a probation enforced by Student Affairs.
The previous Senate administration, captained by then-President Harold Mann, suffered an election-related meltdown in the final months of its term. Among other things,
Mann was nearly removed from office for a code of ethics violation, and presidential ticket Andrew Ritter and Agavni Gasparyan were disqualified from the ballot.
“Senate took a big step back with the first round of last year’s elections." DeMiero said.
