Burglaries decreased in the immediate USC and North University Park areas last month, but increased in the overall Southwest area during the same period, according to Los Angek.*s Police Department and Department of Public Safety reports
Yet behind the conflicting statistics, one student said she felt the impact of crime when her USC home was broken into in December.
"We didn't see a lot of residential burglaries (over winter break), but that probably cannot be said for the rest of the city," said DPS Capt John Thomas "There is a tendency right
around the holidays for robberies and burglaries to go up because criminals know that people are distracted and they're carrying more cash, credit cards and presents.”
LAPD reported a 5 percent increase last month in burglaries in its 13-sq. mile Southwest Division, which includes University Park. The North University Park area wasn't a specific target for criminals, said Officer Jason Lee, a spokesman for LAPD
' Burglars want to not be seen, which is why they won't target dorms full of students." Lee said. "But they will target people on vacation or break."

The recent resignations of three Undergraduate Student Government senators bring the tally of elected representatives who have stepped down to six since the commencement of fall semester. In all, half of USG’s elected senators have resigned during their one-year term, which began in April 2006.
Debbie Liu, USG assistant director of elections and recruitment, will be presented for confirmation to fill one of two vacancies in Greek representation at USG's Tuesday night meeting.
Liu, who came in third last spring’s elections, has resigned from her elections commission position in light of the new job. Raphael Swan, who came in fourth in the elections, has also been contacted regarding filling thc second vacancy, Chaudry said.
Liu will replace Greek Sens. Vanessa Starke and Sagar Patel. USG Vice Starke resigned after leaving USC for the spring semester because of to undisclosed reasons. Patel, who stepped down at the end of fall semester, said he resigned because of too many time commitments USG Vice President Sahil Chaudry confirmed that both Greek senators had sent emails announcing they would be stepping down.
The slew of resignations began when two commuter senators resigned at the beginning of fall semester because of academic conflicts.
