The letter appears on page four The letter, written Friday by history professor Joshua Goldstein and English professor David Lloyd, responded to SCALE’S April 10 sit-in in the lobby of Sample's office. The authors wrote that the administration's actions against the student demonstrators betrayed USC's core values of higher education and social responsibility “(Ihe letter’s) purpose is to express that our administration mishandled the students' requests for dialogue and squashed the protest." Goldstein said Goldstein collected signatures over thc weekend mostly via e-maiL he said. “We sent (the letter) to faculty we thought would be sympathetic and told them to tell others who also felt strongly," he said Students exploit registration glitch About 200 students manipulate URL to register for classes early, according to the registrar's office. By ELLY WONG Daily Troian The Office of Academic Records and Registrar confirmed a glitch in the Web Registration system Monday that allowed students to register for next semester’s courses before their assigned appointment times. In its schedule builder, web registration’s URL reads,"... reload.asp ’’ But by Slumping » USC men s baseball has lost five games in a row, heading into its games with UC Irvine SPORTS, PAGE 20 changing this to “...reload-commit.asp," students were able to fool the system into loading the registration confirmation page. The registrar’s office and Student Information Services fixed the problem after approximately 200 USC students were found to have manipulated the online registration method The unauthorized registrations have all been canceled, and the students will now be able to register at their appointment times or anytime thereafter, said Kenneth Servis, dean of Academic Records and Registrar Some students discovered a method to get around the registration hold and confirm their classes unofficially. By manipulating the web address, students have been able to circumvent the appointment schedule, Servis said. By NANCY CHEN and ALEXANDER COMISAR Daily Trojan Jerome Edwards, a lecturer in USC’s writing program and alumnus of Virginia Tech, was overcome with shock yesterday when he heard what happened to his alma mater. “I woke up and had a number of texts telling me to turn on the news. My first thought was to turn on SportsCenter, because I thought that maybe something had happened to Michael Vick,” he said. “But I turned on CNN, and there was the place 1 went to school." An unidentified gunman devastated Virginia Tech Monday morning, killing 32 and injuring at least 15 before killing himself in what is considered the worst shooting in U.S. history. USC students and facidty were shocked by yesterday's tragedy, but one professor said he was more disturbed at the desensitized attitude toward such events becoming more common occurrences. Bill Boyarsky, a senior lecturcr at thc school of journalism, expressed frustration about the increasing frequency of such acts of violence. “My first thought was that it was odd that I wasn't as horrified as I thought I should have been, Boyarsky said. “There is so much violence and so much death in thc world that we don’t care about it anymore.
