Demonstration raises questions about USC free-speech policy
Student Affairs says it is reviewing free speech policy to clear up misconceptions.

About 15 students gathered in 1 lahn Plaza Tuesday afternoon to symbolically protest what they say is a designated free-speech zone on campus.
The demonstration was just the latest act in a campus-wide debate over USC’s free-expression policy.
The university's free-expression policy — which designates the area around Tommy Trojan as a free demonstration zone where groups may assemble without a permit or permission — has faced scrutiny from students who say it restricts their First Amendment rights on campus. Administrators maintain the entire campus is open to free speech, however.
The members of thc Free Culture club expressed their discontent by marking the borders of the plaza in red tape and placing flyers outside the boundaries that read, "This is not a free speech zone.”
“We’re just a group of students concerned about what free speech means here on USC's campus," said Cameron Parkins, a junior majoring in international relations “We want to visually tape off the free-speech zone and then have people explore those constraints and what they mean.”

Los Angeles Police Department detectives found methamphetamine and a revolver in the apartment of a 19-year-old student who was arrested for threatening two females and assaulting two males with a .25 caliber gun at a party early Sunday morning, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office.
Zaoxing ''Crossing” Yang, a sophomore majoring in business administration, was charged with a felony Monday, according to the District Attorney's Office.

46 cited in Phi Psi drug bust
Six fraternity members were also cited and released for trespassing.

Forty-six members of Phi Kappa Psi were cited by Department of Public Safety officers Friday for smoking marijuana after the fraternity’s chapter adviser tipped off DPS about the drug use, said DPS Capt. David Carlisle.
The bust came just after 4:20 p.m., and the Los Angeles Police Department and chapter adviser accompanied the DPS officers, Carlisle said.
Six of the cited members were arrested — then immediately released — for trespassing, having been previously warned not to enter the fraternity house, according to the report.
“It’s just dumb how it went down and what we did," said Brett Derby, a freshman majoring in business administration who is in the fraternity but was not
present during the raid. “It's not like we deserve to be slapped on the wrist. We definitely deserve to be punished.”
Derby and other fraternity members said that in addition to the adviser’s tip-off, DPS and Student Affairs may have known about the marijuana because of a public Facebook group.
Raph Swann, thc fraternity’s president-elect and a sophomore majoring in cinema-television production, said it is not clear how PhiPsi will be punished.
According to Derby, nobody from PhiPsi has met with university officials yet.
“It's kind of crazy right now,” Swann said. “There hasn’t been any definite action taken on the part of anyone yet.”
Swann later issued a statement stating the fraternity is working with alumni, the Parents Club and USC to come to an “agreeable course of action.”
