University officials explained the university's posting policy on banners and fliers and discussed other university concerns Wednesday night at a town hall meeting held by the Academic Affairs Committee of the Student Senate.
Approximately 40 students turned out to hear Jeff Urdahl, the director of Housing and Residence Halls; Ken Taylor, director of the Office of Residential and Greek Life; Phil Chiaramonte, associate vice president of Auxiliary Services; Craig Springer, associate dean of students; Heather Larabee, assistant director of student activities; Michael Gratz, director of Hospitality Services; and Kyetay Beckner, the student body president.
The event was hosted by Adam Levine, who serves as senate's Academic Affairs director.
Springer started the event by giving a brief overview of the university's banner and flier posting policy.
"There is a perception that somehow this is a brand-new • policy," Springer said.
He said that the policy has been in existence for many years,, but that students have only recently become aware of it.
A flier was distributed explaining the policy. It prohibits content which incites imminent lawless action, contains obscene material, advertises so-called "term paper mills," makes libelous or slanderous statements or promotes alcohol, drugs and drug paraphernalia. It also requires that an English translation of all

Explosion leads to loss of power for Parkside residents

An underground electrical transformer unit exploded early Wednesday morning, causing the entire southwestern portion of campus to lose
power, said Deputy Chief Bob Taylor of the Department of Public Safety.
Around 6 a.m. students in Parkside Apartments heard a loud explosion, said Juan Carlos, a Parkside customer services representative.
Lights were flashing on and off for a few minutes, then electrical power went off around 6:i5 a.m. in the southwest pprt of the campus, which includes Parkside, Parking Structure A and the School of Gerontology, Taylor said.

California's Green Party governor candidate, Dan Hamburg, spoke about his campaign and politics in general to less than 10 students Tuesday. The turnout disap
?ointed leaders of egetarians, which sponsored the event.
Hamburg, a former Democratic congressman, focused on the changing face of politics and dismantling the two-party system.
"Tne game has changed," Hamburg said. "People who seemed so liberal a decade ago now seem so conservative.
"It's important to try to get students to engage in politics. Many times they don't because
they find it unattractive. They have very little faith and very little hope."
Sriniva9an Lakshmanan, a graduate student in computer science and founder of USC Vegetarians, expected between 30 to 200 students to attend the event. "I was mad (about the turnout). We put our fliers and our e-mail (out)," he said.
Hamburg is reaching out to college students in the state with the hopes of spreading the Green Party's message and challenging the two-party system.
"This is less to get people to vote Green and more to get people active,'' Hamburg said.

Teenager arrested in carjacking

A alleged teenage gang member carjacked a USC student in front of Troy East Apartments Tuesday night only to be arrested by police back in his own neighborhood, a Department of Public Safety official said.
Hugo Zuniga, an 18-year-old from the area surrounding the Los Angeles Sports Arena, stole a white Nissan belonging to USC student Lauren Furman, said Deputy Chief Bob Taylor.
