Carthy Quad, USC’s wireless has you covered, according to a survey by PC Magazine ranking USC No. 8 on its list of Top 10 Most Wired Colleges.
The survey, published in the magazine's December issue, was conducted in conjunction with The Princeton Review and ranks universities in terms of "technology and connectivity on their campuses,” using three categories: academics, student resources and infrastructure
Tom Katsouleas, vice provost for Information Services and professor of electrical engineering, said it is “gratifying" that USC has become a model for other universities
“(The rank is) another nice example of how USC is pursuing its vision to be the model of the 21st century university." he said.
The magazine praised USC for its supercomputer, which is ranked 41st in the world, and in 2005 <fes named second-fastest supercomputer in an academic setting by Top500 Supercomputer Sites
Although the USC supercomputer fell from being ranked 26th in June 2006 because of some missed upgrades while the data center was being moved. Carl Kesselman. research associate professor of computer science and USC expert on high-performance computing and grid technology, said the USC supercomputer is still “currently outpacing UCLA "
Along with the supercomputer, PC Magazine also gave USC credit for its 652 wireless access ports, 280 classrooms equipped with multiple webcams and microphones, Blackboard course management system, 200 megabytes of online storage for students and video-con-ferencing system in every library meeting room
The magazine also acknowledged USC's technological capabilities for its “usability and one-touch access."
Katsouleas said although there is no open competition between schools to be the most wired, “(USC is shooting) to be a leader in academia in all ways"
“In high performance computing, there's always a bit of a contest to see who is bigger or faster," Kesselman said.
Some of the plans for increasing and improving technology at USC this semester include expanding wireless access to all common areas, “whereever people eat, meet and greet." Katsouleas said Other plans include “(wireless) access that recognizes (students and faculty) and visitors and gives you access accordingly" by reading the user's personal computer code, known as a MAC address.
The expanded access, which is aimed at being "user friendly" and eliminating the kteeinu on process, is "unique to USC.’ Katsouleas said

LAPD rules out foul play in the death of 21-year-old kicker Mario Danelo.
By DAN GREENSPAN

Mario Danelo, a redshirt junior placc-kicker for the USC football team, was found dead Saturday in his hometown of San Pedro. He was 21.
His body was discovered at the base of the cliffs ait Point Fermin Park, in what the Los Angeles Police Department has characterized as either an accident or suicide.
An autopsy was conducted Monday, with toxicology rcstdts and cause of death determination several weeks away.
Danelo, who arrived as a walk-on in 2003, earned a scholarship two years later after becoming the Trojans' starting kicker.
"To be the first-string kicker at a big program with a lot of pressure, he made so many incredible kicks," special teams graduate assistant Sam Anno said Monday after a team meeting. "He was a true professional." .
Anno visited a makeshift vigil Sunday, hoping to make sense of Danelo’s death.
“I really wanted to see in the situation if slipping and falling was plausible,” he said. “That calmed me It was really wrong place, wrong time.”
Danelo made 83-of-86 extra points, setting NCAA records for both attempts •
