written in the Senate constitution, pledging to “serve the undergraduate student body of USC to the best of (their) ability .” “It is neat now that it is finally official,’' said Dana Parker, commuter senator and a sophomore majoring in public policy and management. “I’ve been working as if it were official ever since I was elected, but I couldn’t say I was a commuter senator because I wasn’t.”
Some members of this year’s Senate attended the ceremony along with administrators including President Steven B. Sample and Michael L Jackson, vice president of Student Affairs.
Sample pointed out that both Tyler Kelley, Senate president and a junior majoring in political science and international relations, and Cat Goddard, Senate vice president and a junior majoring in English and philosophy, were enrolled in his leadership class.

Meeting: Senators confirm 10 of 12 appointed directors at first meeting of 1999-2000 term
By JENNIFER MEDINA
Student Senate Writer
The 10 newly appointed members of Student Senate were confirmed only one vote away from an unanimous vote at the first 1999-2000 meeting Tuesday night.
The directors, who gave two-minute presentations and answered questions from other Senate members, were appointed two weeks ago by the 1999-2000 Senate president, vice president and chief of staff.
“This went so quickly because all senators had time to interview (the appointed members), talk to them on the phone and e-mail them,” said Tyler Kelley, Senate president and a junior majoring in political science and international relations. “This selection was not made by one person, but by three people. All of the people appointed were extremely qualified for their position."
Emma Graglia, who w as appointed director of campus affairs, resigned Monday night because she felt she would not have enough time to commit to Senate.
“Maybe I could have done it, but it w ould have been a great challenge and it is not a challenge 1 am Wttag to risk,' said Graglia, a sophomore majoring in public policy and management. "If I lose it would not be only me who loses, but all of Senate as well.”
Graglia said she still plans to serve as assistant director of campus affairs and will pass on her work to the newly appointed director.
Kelley said interviews for the position will be conducted Friday and the director will be appointed, pending confirmation, at the next Senate meeting on Tuesday.
Mike Ghaffary, who was appointed course guide director, was unable to attend Tuesday night’s meeting but will be up for confirmation next week, Kelley said.
Matt Andrews, treasurer and a junior majoring in English, was the only person who was not confirmed unanimously, as Dana Parker, a commuter senator, abstained from voting.
“(I was concerned) because he did not have a lot of experience in Senate,” said Parker, a sophomore majoring in public policy and management. “But over the past two weeks he has been in the office all the time talking to (Renato Moreno, the administrative assistant in Senate) and (Hye Young Park, 1998-99 Senate treasurer). He is obviously a quick learner."
Parker said she was also concerned because Andrews is the president of fraternity Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
“It is the biggest leadership position in the house," Parker said. “Obviously, it involves some sort of time commitment. Since I had some doubts I didn’t feel right just confirming him into office."

Arrest calls attention to hiring

Melissa virus leaves campus computers mostly unaffected

The arrest of temporary employee Donald Davis on March 27 was an unusual incident and hiring procedures will not be changed because of the incident, Auxiliary
Services officials said.
USC uses temp agencies to hire all temporary employees and plans to continue using the same hiring procedures, including using the same temp agency used to hire Davis, said Dawn Mugavero, director of Auxiliary Services Human Resources. Although Mugavero refrained from naming the temp agency, she said that Davis was not indicative of the quality of employees coming from that specific temp agency.
“We will continue to use them so long as we feel com-
fortable,” Mugavero said.
As of March 1, USC had added a background check to its hiring procedures. USC pays a fee to the temp agencies, which then conduct the background check, Mugavero said.
“It's becoming fairly common to include that as part of the hiring process,” Mugavero said.
After Davis’ arrest, USC began conducting more thorough background checks, Mugavero said.

University computer networks and computer labs were not infected by the Melissa virus because they aren't equipped with the Outlook e-mail program included in Microsoft's Office software, which the virus targeted, said Phil Reese, executive director of the infrastructure core of the Information Services Division.
As soon as the university was notified about the virus, all virus scanning mechanisms were updated so that by Monday, the computers were protected from Melissa.

Computers on campus were generally unaffected by the virus nicknamed Melissa that infiltrated more than 100,000 computers worldwide last week, Information Services officials said.
