Student dies while playing basketball
Pre-existing heart condition apparent cause
By Travis Smith and Nik Trendowski
Staff Writers
A USC student died early yesterday while playing basketball in Fagg Park, said Deputy Chief Robert Taylor of the Department of Public Safety.
Edwin Calvano, who majored in business administration, died
of unconfirmed causes apparently related to a pre-existing heart condition for which he was taking medication, Taylor said. Calvano was 21 years old.
Calvano collapsed while playing basketball on the courts at Fagg Park, located in front of Parking Structure C, at about 11 p.m. Monday, Taylor said.
Several other students flagged down an officer in a passing DPS car that was on routine patrol, telling the officer that their friend had collapsed and was having difficulty breathing, he said.
Officers Robert Conover and Brent Archibald conducted cardiopulmonary resuscitation on Calvano while Officer Bunnie
Jatkowski attended the scene, Taylor said.
The officers called for an ambulance, which took Calvano to California Medical Center in downtown Los Angeles while technicians monitored Cal-vano's condition with a heart monitor and breathing device, Taylor said.
Calvano died at approximately 12:04 a.m. at the hospital, according to DPS's Crime / Incident Report.

The results are in order of the number of votes each candidate received:
• In the Student Community constituency, the winners were Shabazz Moye, Cesar Lopez, Kari Cutler / Chisholm and Laura Lee.
• In the Residence Hall constituency, the winners were Jennifer Canillas, Mike Newhouse, James Emerson and Brandon
Mercer. Karreem Washington placed third in votes but withdrew from the election last week.
• In the Commuter constituency, the winners were Imaad Zuberi, Matt Fromm, Matthew Harper and Rick Herriott.
• In the Greek constituency, the winners were Radha Thompson, Sarah Zuercher, Mario Del Pero and John Casarietti.
The Judicial Council heard appeals yesterday from Strengthen the Senate, SC Traditions and Empower USC. These slates were previously disqualified by the senate election committee due to testimony alleging the (See Elections, page 2)
Native American group holds first powwow
Organizers of event overcome approval, funding and other problems
By Allison Vana
Staff Writer
Slogging through university red tape and overcoming financing woes by garnering sponsors, the Native American Student Association held its first powwow last Saturday on campus.
The powwow was held at Alumni Park from noon to 7 p.m., but its organizers had to clear several hurdles before the first drum was struck or the first song chanted.
One of the biggest problems faced by NASA was getting approval from the administration to hold the event. Many in the administration did not even know what a potlatch was, said Alisa Caldwell, a freshman majoring in international relations, and a co-organizer of the event.
"I can understand people having not been raised in an environment where they would know what a powwow is. But L.A. is the largest urban setting for urban Native Americans across the nation. I'm from the Midwest and I can run into more people there who know what a powwow is than here," she said.
There was also concern in the administration about the turnout and security for the event, and a question of on what day the event could be held, Caldwell said. The powwow had to be held on a weekend because many of its participants and their families come from a distance and work during the week.
Once the event was approved in late November of last year, NASA had to find funding for the powwow. With only eight members, the organization is not considered
an assembly on campus and consequently has little direct access to university funds.
“The (NASA) came to us because they were looking for some help. Not being an assembly, they needed some financial support," said Joaquin Serna, the marketing director for USC Spectrum, one of the sponsors of the event. "We decided to give money to them because we felt that the powwow was an important instrument in giving Native Americans some representation at USC.
It was a worthwhile event for both the campus and the whole community," he said.
While traditional powwows usually run for an entire weekend, last Saturday's event lasted seven hours, said Tracy Enloe, a senior majoring in aerospace engineering and a co-organizer of the eventj.
"The first year is always the most difficult when you are holding events like this. Most major universities have powwows about once or twice a year and USC has never had one.
"There are about 100 to 120 Native Americans registered on campus and we have the potential to grow, but the problem is that many people don't know we exist. Hopefully this powwow helped to change that," Enloe said.
The powwow was a celebration of Native-American community, song, dance and food, and at one point, seven men formed a drum circle, all beating one drum while singing.
