Letter reveals impact of library budget cuts
New programs and hours will be affected
By Andrew Staubly

The university has planned a 10-percent cut in the budget of university libraries, according to a leaked memorandum between University Librarian Peter Lvman, and Michael Fry, the chairperson of the university library committee.
The memo, received by the Daily Trojan through the mail, deals with the probable impact that a 10-percent cut would have on university libraries.
“The budget cut would be about $500,000,” Lyman said in an interview.
This would mean that the university would be unable to purchase many current professional journals that graduate students and faculty require to do research, Lyman
said, adding that faculty especially need the journals to keep up with their research projects.
"This will have a devastating effect on the number of books we are able to purchase,” he said.
Lyman also said the university libraries have lost 34 staff members, may have to cut another 18, and possibly reduce hours and services at some of the smaller libraries.
"This move would be necessary in order to make sure that the more heavily used libraries would be sufficiently staffed," Lyman said.
Lyman said that other library systems, like UCLA and Stanford, are also experiencing budget cutbacks. The budget crunch has

The Student Coalition Slate got a taste of its own medicine at Saturday's basketball game at the Sports Arena.
At the Arizona game, an unknown group circulated fliers calling Derrick Pedranti, leader of the slate, and his brother, Will, the "David Dukes of the West." Prior to the Student Senate elections, the slate used a bogus endorsement from Harold Miner on a flier passed out at the UCLA game.
The anti-Pedranti flier had a large "3" printed on the back and read "USC College Republicans seek monopoly of Senate" and "Don't let them jeopardize your student money." The flier encouraged students to attend the March 25 meeting, when elections for all senate executive offices will be held.
Several student organizations are planning to block the election of Derrick as president with a "show of force" inside Senate chambers the day of the election, said Christopher Welch,
director of speakers for the Program Board.
The Pedrantis' slate, the "Student Coalition," won a 9-seat majority in senate elections March 2 and 3. Derrick has been nominated for president and Will has been nominated for vice president. Both would have the required majority for election if all members of their slate vote for them.
Hans House, president of University Residential Student Community said, "(Pedranti's) slate is supported and backed by
the College Republicans; (The slate's) policy and plans are highly influenced by them."
Though Derrick was president of the College Republicans last year, he disagrees with assertions that the group influenced the slate. "I would say what these people are saying are lies. They will go to any extent to knock me out," he said.

Reactions to fight between SAE and ATO remain mixed

After an SAE member was beaten by several still-unidentified members of Alpha Tau Omega on March 7, ten of his fraternity brothers paid a visit to the ATO house, which escalated into a " brawl between SAE and ATO," said Jenny Higby, an eyewitness to the incident.
The "brawl" has produced uncertainty as to the future of the two houses and who is to blame for the fighting.
When University Security and the Los Angeles Police Department dispersed the crowd, several uncooperative witnesses told security "You better cite Sig Alpha Epsilon for starting the fight," according to security's report.
But members of a neighboring fraternity who watched the incident said "ATO has been protected the past couple years. ATO had better get it now, that's all I can say."
