‘Borrowed’ cart buses students to 5-0, 9-0 clubs
An electric cart was stolen from the front of Topping Student Center late Thursday night and recovered on its way to the 901 Club, University Security officals said.
A staff member drove the cart to Topping to pick up some video equipment, according to Sgt. John Lewis of security. But when he returned, the cart was gone.
The staff member reported the theft around 11:30 p.m., and Officer Jim Farrington spotted the cart rolling by the intersection of University Avenue and 30th Street.
"Three guys and two girls were on the cart," Lewis said. Apparently, Lewis added, the girls had 'borrowed' the cart from Topping.
"The guys said the girls had met them at the 5-0, where they'd had a few beers. Then the girls asked the guys to drive them over to the 9-0. But the girls bailed when the cart got pulled over.
Lewis said the three male students had no idea the cart was stolen. The two female students were never caught.

Security was ‘insufficient’
Memos released prior to rape show need for more protection
By Pete Gallo
Staff Writer
Capt. Luther Lanier of University Security continued his testimony on the witness stand Friday at Los Angeles County Superior Court in a civil suit brought against the university by a rape victim.
The victim has charged the university with fraud, negligence, failure to protect, and failure to warn students of known criminal activity around the Embassy Residential College, said civil attorney Natasha
Roit, who is representing the plaintiff.
The victim was raped in her car near the Embassy Residential College on Jan. 10, 1988, by a juvenile suspect. Two days earlier, a woman was raped bv the same suspect in the parking lot across the street from Embassy. The suspect was also sighted on Jan. 9, 1988, the day between the two incidents, said Roit.
The suspect was convicted of both crimes and is currently serving an 18-year sentence in
prison, according to court documents.
Roit questioned Lanier on several documents which she said highlighted negligence on the part of the university.
One of the documents which was dated less than a month before the incident, was a three-page campus memo entitled "Watch Deployment of Security at Embassy Residential College."
The memo, written by Sgt. Peter Wittingham of University Security, cited poor deployment tactics at Embassy.
"It is my view that the present deployment of three personnel per watch is marginal at best and inadequate at worst," Wit-
tingham wrote in the memo.
Lanier testified that the memo was out of the ordiniary due to its length and because it was submitted on the independent initiative of a member of security.
The second document concerning the deployment of security personnel at Embassy was submitted to Lanier on Nov. 16, 1987.
This report written by Lt. Michael Kennedey concludes,"I therefore submit that the deployment plan for Embassy is insufficient and a potential safety hazard to our personnel deployed there and the residents and staff they are responsible (See Trial, page 15)

KSCR to be heard within mile radius of campus
By Nikki Surles
Staff Writer
After a 2 1 / 2 year hiatus, KSCR is scheduled to be back on the radio dial Monday, allowing students within a one mile radius of campus to pick up the station on the FM band instead of cable television.
The new "leaky" FM station will be on the air from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. From 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., the station will play modern rock along with a few news and sports updates.
From 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. during the week and all day on Sunday, it will have specialty
shows such as all classic rock or all reggae, said Raymond So, general manager of the station.
The wray leaky FM actually works is complicated. The station's signal is not transmitted, it is emitted.
"A transmitter has an antenna and it broadcasts a signal. We are leaking onto a poor shielded cable. The FCC would qualify us as a giant cordless telephone," So said.
Leaky FM is still being developed. So far, emitters are in Pardee Tower, Marks Tower,

alterations keep up with modern times
What's wrong with this picture?
Nothing, actually.
After months of work, the Daily Trojan has changed its look in an effort to make the newspaper more reader-friendly and keep pace with the changing newspaper industry.
The process began last fall, with the overall opinion of the editors that a new flag was needed. They felt that the lowercase lettering and outlined letters were dated in style. The flag had not been changed in over a decade.
Under fall semester editor Petula Dvorak and then-News editor Mike Carlson, the newspaper studied various redesign options.
At the end of the semester, Donn Poll, head of Poll Communications Group in Minneapolis, was hired to complete the redesign.
Poll visited the university in January, talking to editors, students and administrators about what they wanted to see in the paper. His utilization of that input is largely responsible for the design you see today.

Campaigns over, voting starts today

After a month of heated anticipation, Student Senate elections finally have arrived today, and will carry on through Tuesday.
A total of eight different poll locations, including one off-campus sight, will be set up, in an attempt to reach a large proportion of the student community, said Election
Commissioner Kevin Russell.
"In past years, one poll was set up in front of Tommy Trojan for five days, but many commuters, for example, don't pass by there. Hopefully the new, more accessable sights will bring more voters," Russell said.
Russell said he hopes 3,000 students will vote, but Senate President Sam Sheldon said he wants an honest election more (See Elections, page 14)
