Students and faculty reacted with both praise and criticism to a letter President Steven B. Samplr wrote to the USC community ao a reminder to "make certain that our discussions are framed by civility and mutual respect" in the face of the campus’ and the nation’s pditi cal climate.

Most of the Are alarms are considered vandalism, and they usually occur in dorms or other undergraduate housing, he said.
“All the false alarms are considered vandalism, and they’re completely rampant on campus," he said.
McCain responded to three Wednesday night
The university's monitoring system has been modem ized and is in good condition, but it is nearly impossible to catch vandals, he added.
Electricians at the university that respond to Are alarms rotate on an either day or night shift from 7 a.m. to 330 pm or from 3:30 pm. to 7 a.m.
The university issues Are drills several times a year so students can know where to evacuate to in the case of an actual Are. Despite their being planned, McClain still has to be on hand to turn off the alarms when the drills take place.

Winter homeless shelters throughout Los Angeles County, including two within two miles of USC, will close down Saturday morning at 8 a.m., leaving many uncertain about the location of their next bed or meal.
The shelter program runs from Dec. 1 to March 15 each year but would require large increases in funding to keep this year's 19 locations open year round, said Harrison Soberanis, founder and director of People Helping People, a shelter on the 5700 block of South San Pedro SL
“It breaks my heart every March 15,” Soberanis said, “lt’s.really needed year round, but the government just cries that there's no money."
