ATO and SAE suspended
Saturday’s fraternity brawl leaves one hospitalized
By Travis Smith
Staff Writer
Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Alpha Tau Omega have been suspended by the university because of a fight early Saturday morning, which hospitalized one member of SAE and took eight police officers and a helicopter to disperse, according to university documents.
Mike Crowell, a junior majoring in business, said he was hospitalized with a concussion and strained neck muscles when he was knocked down and beaten by members of ATO.
University Security spotted Crowell, lying unconscious on the lawn of Tau Epsilon Phi, and called for backup, said Sgt. John Lewis of security. By the time other security officers and Los Angeles Police Department officers arrived, 20 to 30 people were fighting in the street outside the ATO house, Lewis said.
The fight broke up within half

a minute after security arrived, he said. Paramedics were called in, and Crowell was taken to California Hospital for treatment, said LAPD officers at the scene.
"When I got hit, I was completely knocked out," Crowell said. He said he remembers nothing that happened that night, either before the incident

or after he was hit.
President Tom Deardorff and members of ATO would not comment on the incident, nor would SAE president Jason Harris.
“We're really not too sure what went on ourselves," Harris said.
Jenny Higby, a junior majoring in communications, was
with Crowell when the fight took place, and said the incident started when she and Crowell were arguing on the lawn outside the Pi Beta Phi house around 1:15 a.m.
Most of the SAE members were involved with an exchange with Delta Gamma earlier that evening, and were returning home at that time, said a fraternity member.
Several members of ATO were sitting on a wall next door at the Kappa Alpha Theta house, Higby said. She said she didn't recognize any of them.
They yelled to Crowell and her not to pass them on the sidewalk, she said. She walked into the street to pass by the KAT house, but Crowell walked on the sidewalk, Higby said.
"Mike said, 'Excuse me, I can walk by if I want to,' " Higby said.

Greeks react to lewd songs
Opinions divided regarding traditional lyrics on the Row
By Jennifer Watson
Staff Writer
In light of a recent controversy involving UCLA's Phi Kappa Psi chapter, USC students have mixed reactions to the existence of sexually explicit songs within the Greek system.
The controversy arose several weeks ago when an anonymous-source gave a copy of the fraternity's songbook to Together, a campus feminist magazine. The song lyrics focus on sexual violence against women, suggesting the use of chain saws, cheese graters and whips as tools of sexual torment.
While songs like this do exist on 1 the Row as part of its many traditions, many Greek members at USC disapprove of such behavior.
Plans are in effect to bring up the issue at an upcoming Interfraternity Council meeting to make certain similar behavior is not practiced within the USC community.
"I'm sure (UCLA's Phi l6ippa Psi) did not mean any harm, but such actions make the whole Greek system look horrible," said USC Interfraternity Council President Mike Rein-stein, who called the songbook tasteless, degrading and offensive.
The negative image that UCLA's
chapter portrayed is not one with which USC wants to be associated, Reinstein said.
"If it exists at USC, we will do what we can to stop it. We will find it, and we will change it," Reinstein said.
"As attitudes about women change, questionable songs will decrease, but all we can do as leaders is to try to change attitudes," said Dan Brewster, IFC vice president of public relations.
Brewster said it is common for fraternities and sororities to have sexually explicit songs in their repertoire.
