First female leader of Haiti promises to clean up country
PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — President Ertha Pascal-Trouillot pledged at her inauguration Tuesday “to clean the face of Haiti" with a provisional civilian government that will lead this country to its first free elections.
Pascal-Trouillot, who took a leave of absence as Supreme Court justice, is the first female president in the 186-year history of this impoverished Caribbean island nation.
She was sworn in a day after military ruler Lt. Gen. Prosper Avril fled following a week of violent demonstrations against his 18-month regime that left at least 24 dead in the streets of Haiti.

Carrier says he’s going to join NFL
By Chris Wiley
Assistant Sports Editor
Little more than a month after teammate Junior Seau decided to turn pro, USC safety Mark Carrier announced Tuesday that he will also forego his final year of eligibility and enter the National Football League draft in April.
"After a long process of talking to Coach (Larry) Smith and my family, I've decided that it's time for me to turn pro," Carrier said. "I feel that 1 have accomplished a lot here at USC and that it's time for me to move on. While there is a little bit of sadness, there's also an eagerness to achieve new goals."
Carrier, a two-time All-American, was also a first-team All Pacific 10 Conference selection the past two seasons. He led the Trojans in interceptions last season with seven, and finished with 13 for his career, placing him sixth on USC's career interception list.
Carrier also led the team in fumble recoveries with three and was second in tackles with 107.
He had announced last week that he would miss most of spring practice — which began last Thursday — while deciding whether or not to stay.

Candidate to fight election because of Ts
By Michael Utley
Assistant City Editor
Despite the Student Senate Judicial Council's decision on Friday to validate this year's contested election, an unsuccessful candidate said she is planning to file anoth er complaint today aimed at nullifying the election on charges of unfair political campaign tactics.
The complaint centers around 11 candidates who identified themselves with a political slate by placing the Roman numeral one (I) after each member's name on the official ballot — an illegal act, according to Los Angeles city election regulations.
If the election is nullified, it will be the second time in as many years that some sort of corruption has caused a re-vote. Last year, the election was nullified when candidates were accused of ballot tampering.
Nicole MacDonald, an incumbent student community senator who lost in last week's election, said she decided to.file her second complaint — scheduled to be heard at tonight's senate meeting — on the basis of a little-known rule which states that:
"There shall be nothing on any ballot indicative of the party affiliation, source of candidacy or support of anv candidate." (Article XXVII, Sec. 326, Charter of the Citv of Los Angeles.)

University president selection begins
Nominations to be announced in the fall
By Bob Elston
Assistant Gty Editor
The university board of trustees' Search Committee was handed the responsibility to begin the search and selection of a new university president in a committee meeting Tuesday morning.
George Scharffenberger, chairman of the board of trustees who is instrumental in initiating the search for a new president, said today in an interview following the honors convocation that the names of
the search committee will be announced Friday.
"The process is now underway,” Scharffenberger said. "(The committee) will be charged with producing up to five candidates by Oct. 1."
Administration officials have said they expect the entire search and selection process to take about a year before a new president is chosen.
The 16-person committee, comprised of faculty, alumni, staff and students, will
be responsible for compiling about five candidates.
Scharffenberger said that the committee is awaiting two letters of acceptance before the names of the search committee members are announced. The search committee will be chaired by Warren Ben-nis, distinguished professor of management and organization and author of numerous books on leadership.
"The search committee . . . will publicize the search, solicit nominations and applications, and make initial screenings and evaluations of potential candidates," (See President, page 21)
