Despite harsh economic times, the number of applicants to the USC Graduate School programs this year increased by about 100 applicants compared to last year.
Students and faculty said USC’s reputation inspired many of the 16,744 students from around the world to apply to the Graduate School.
Joseph Hellige, dean of the USC Graduate School, attributes the school’s growing popularity to its status as a leading research university in the country.
“I believe that the reputation of many of our graduate programs is increasing, and that may well account for at least some of the increase we see in the number of applicants,” Hellige said.

During the last two years, the number of applicants has increased by about 9 percent, said Laurel Tew, director of admissions.
The USC Graduate School offers more than 80 different programs for students to apply to and a number of subprograms within each of the fields.

USC sophomore creates remedy that cures adverse reaction to milk sugar
By JASON CARTER
Contributing Writer
* ndrew Ritter was once lactose intolerant, but now eats what-he wants without worrying, thanks to his homemade cure.
Ritter, a sophomore majoring in political science, could not eat any dairy products without getting severe stomach cramps. One tablespoon of milk would put him in the bathroom for an hour, he said.
“When you’re lactose intolerant, you fear every dairy product," Ritter said. People who suffer from lactose intolerance have to ask if food is made with milk or butter wherever they go. ■
Ritter claims he developed a cure that works 100 percent of the time.
“I’ve cured about 80 people," Ritter said. “Anyone Who has taken this product can now have dairy.”
At the age of 13, Ritter began researching lactose intolerance as part of a seventh-grade science experiment
With the information he gathered, Ritter concocted a powdery substance from all natural ingredients and tried it on himself, he said.
"I basically used myself as a guinea pig," Ritter said. “1 didn’t know I was going to cure myself at all."
Because he is seeking to patent his product Ritter did not reveal the ingredients he used
The powder can be dissolved in water, and Ritter has developed a step-by-step process for drinking the solution with meals during a period of about five weeks.
The next four days are a trial period with dairy products added to the diet If the symptoms of gas, diarrhea and cramps do not return, anything on the menu is fair game.
Taking lactose pills that allow the body to digest diary is the most common remedy on the market today.

One person detained as SWAT, LAPD bomb squad secure area; a university facility evacuated by police
By ELIZABETH BROTHERTON & ALEXANDER NGUYEN

Employees were evacuated and several streets around campus were shut down Thursday morning after a man walked into the Felix Chevrolet car dealership on Figueroa Street claiming to have an explosive device strapped to him, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.
Employees at the car dealership were initially evacuated to the body shop and then to the Shrine Auditorium back parking lot. Some employees did not know what was happening when LAPD evacuated the dealership.
“It was like 10:30 when one of the managers said, ‘You have to move it, there’s some guy with a bomb,’" said Enrique Tolebo, an employee at Los Angeles Downtown Motors. “So we left"
SWAT team members and LAPD bomb squad were called to the scene and the suspect was taken into custody, said Sgt. John Pasquariello. The explosive device looked real but turned out to be a fake, he later said.
The crime area, located at the corner of Figueroa Street and Jefferson Boulevard, was secured and cleared for re-entry at about 2:30 p.m.
The incident could be part of an extortion scheme, Pasquariello
said. He would not comment further on the exact details of the scheme.
“There is an active investigation,” he said. “Were working vigorously on it We have some of our best people on it"
Several local news outlets reported that an unknown outside party coerced the suspect into the plot by threatening his family.
Officials would not comment on those claims.
There is no security guard at the dealership, Tolebo said adding anyone coula walk into the building.
Police officers set up their command post between the Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts and the School of Theatre Scene Shop, located at the corner of 32nd and Figueroa streets. Figueroa
Street between 35th and 30th streets and cross streets from 1-110 to Hoover Street was closed to traffic.
Parking Lot T and Parking structures D and X were also inaccessible because the streets surrounding them were closed.
Neither the Zemeckis Center nor the School of Theatre Scene Shop was evacuated, but the
Davidson Conference Center was.
Four events were scheduled at the Davidson Conference Center at the time, including the College Bowl tournament. The academic challenge was in its final round when the contestants were told to evacuate.
