The hospital will offer the same highest level of services for a level one trauma center and acute care, according to health officials.
The Los Angeles Board of Supervisors approved the award of construction contract, at approximately $4.98 million, to developer* McCarthy-Clark fIU/H, a joint construction venture. Dec. 3.2002, county ofricfali said.
Construction began April 1 near the current hospital.
Plans to build a new 950-bed hospital began in 1972. Since then, several different phases were proposed.
The final design was completed by HOK Design Inc. in May 2002.
The new LAC-USC is estimated to cost less than $500 million and will span 1.5 million square feet with four major components: a 600-inpatient tower, an outpatient clinic, a base-isolated diagnostic/treatment building and a central plant, Altman said.
The most exciting feature about the new center is the base-isolated building, which sits on 57 bumpers that can resist up to 8.5 on the Richter scale and is self-sustainable during an emergency for up to % hours, he said.
In order to complete the new hospital, four existing on-campus hospital facilities will be replaced, six buildings will be demolished, LAC-USC occupants and utilities will be relocated, and all hazardous materials will be removed, according to the LAC-USC development Web site.
All new systems for the hospital will be updated, electronic and paperless, said Dr. Cynthia Stotts, chief of staff at LAC-USC.

USC tries to ease housing crunch

Two of the buildings will be apartment complexes built by independent companies. The third would be built by the university and would complete the second phase of the International Residential College at Parkside, said Jeff Urdahl, director of Housing Services.
The new housing should relieve some of the housing crunch that plagues USC as it does many large universities. Real estate is tight
throughout Southern California, and universities reflect that, Urdahl said.
“It is a very good thing,” Urdahl said. “I am enthusiastic about what I’m hearing."
At the beginning of this semester, plans for building were being discussed, but only recently have the projects been made definite.

Throughout the last three years, Facilities Management has added 1,600 additional bike parking spaces with 200 new bike racks, a Facilities Management official said.
But the number of bikes confiscated by Department of Public Safety for illegal parking has increased this year compared to last year, said DPS Sgt Gerald Baker, manager of student law enforcement
The number of confiscated bikes has prompted students to wonder whether more bike racks are needed.

“There’s not enough bike racks! especially at (Kaprielian Hall)," said Kate McKeon, a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering.
"The other day I was late for class because I was waiting for a bike rack and didn’t want to lock my bike to itself."
Henry Lacher, director of buildings and grounds, said there are 4,209 bike parking spots on campus.
“We’ve put bike racks in almost every possible spot," Lacher said.
These spots, however, cannot always be where students would want them, he said.
