Hie death of Hank Gathers, the I oyola Mary mount Universit\ basketball star who played Ius freshman year at USC, not only has shaken Lovola, but also his past coaches who knew him during liis short time here.
. Gathers, 23, died Sunday after collapsing on the court di ring l.ovola s tournament semifinal game against the University of Portland. As a senior, Gathers was the sixth-leading collegiate basketball scorer in the nation and was a .probable first-round NBA draft choice.
Gathers was recruited tor USC's 1985-86 season bv then-USC basketball coach Stan Morrison. He played for the I rojans before transferring to l.oyola after Morrison was fired and current coach George Raveling took over.

China to continue Fulbright exchange on reduced level
BEIJING — China has agreed to resume participation in the Fulbright program on a smaller scale than in recent years, the U.S. Embassy said Monday.
Chinese officials agreed to send 16 Chinese scholars and students to the United States next year to do research and to accept 16 U.S. professors to teach, said embassy spokesman Sheridan W. Bell. He said the embassy was still awaiting a letter from the Chinese government to formalize the agreement.
China took part in the exchange program for a decade, with 24 scholars traveling recently.
It abruptly canceled the 1989-90 academic year exchanges in August in anger over U.S. criticism of the army’s killing of protesters in Beijing.
Talks on resuming the exchanges began in December, after National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft made a visit to Beijing.

Residents discover more Access gaps

As Access officials were getting over the recent failure of their $1.5 million security system at Century Apartments, yet another flaw has been discovered by residents at Vista and Regal Trojan apartment buildings.
Both complexes can be opened with the simple manipulation of a broomstick.
Scott Fordik, a Vista .resident, has been using a broomstick arid other similar objects to pop open the magnetized door from the inside, apparently without damaging it.
The main entrance leading into Vista apartments is surrounded by a cage with thin bars and a magnetized Access security door. Fordik and other residents figured out that all they needed was a stick long enough to shove between the bars and tap the small release lever, which is supposed to be used by people on the inside as they exit.
“Quite a few people know how to do it," Fordik said. "It's pretty obvious that you can'just put something through and push it."
Though Fordik said he does not think any would-be burglars have picked up on this method, he did mention that his roommate's brother has used this technique, without ever being shown how by a resident.
A similar cage set up at Regal Trojan Apartments is susceptible to the technique and Howard Heller, a resident at the complex, said he and other residents have been aware of the problem for some time.	-------Jl
Residential Protection officers were dispatched to both sites after being informed of the problem and a report is being sent to Physical Plant advising them to fix the cages, said Bill McGreevy, a community service officer.
Access System manager Terry Riley was reportedly in a meeting Monday and could not be reached for comment.
This most recent breach of the security system follows a similar incident in January when residents at Century Apartments discovered that several magnetized doors in their complex could be either jerked or kicked open with relative ease.

Though they have not specified the
amount, Housing Services has said a percentage of last year's rent increase has gone to pay for the Access system.
Vista residents said they were also upset because the system's card readers seem to malfuction when exposed to water. Legon and two other residents said they were were locked out of the building (See Access, page 9;
