The stop was changed from its original loca tion on Figueroa Street, between hxposition Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue, to the 37th Street Transitway Station, under the 110 freeway. "It is a gang neighborhood,” said Ansuya Chhabria, an auditor for Information Services Division. “(There's) a halfway house across from the DMV, homeless people approaching you for money. It’s not a pleasant place to walk.’’ Several staff members began a petition against the change and gathered about 65 signatures from staff, students and non-USC riders Of interest... He said it was made in order to benefit tlie majority of riders, who indicated in a 2001 survey that they would not mind the new location if it saved them time. Many USC bus riders said they were not polled about their views on the new stop location, and the time difference is not worth the potential danger of the new location. Chhabria said that she plans to buy a 911 hot-button telephone and pepper spray to protect herself. Even with these precautions, her continued use of the No. 448 bus is temporary, she added. Once daylight-saving time starts, she will take another bus, even though it will add 20 minutes to her trawl time. Michael Thompson, a sophomore majoring .in communication, said he rode the bus regularly before the move. Calling the new stop “the 37th St Transit Center” is misleading, for it is not really a station, he said in an e-mail. Sara Gazarek has been practicing for her career since she wasfaur years old. Gazarek, a senior majoring in jazz studies, is a jazz singer who has sung professionally since she was 16. Last Saturday Gazarek had her best gig,to date — a solo performance at the Pasadena Jazz Institute. It was a gig she landed the same way she lands all of her shows, by sending out a press kit to the booking agents of clubs, restaurants and bars. “You have to figure out who the person is who sets the dates.” Gazarek said Student musicians must land gigs at restaurant bars or events to further their careers. LADOT moved a Figueroa Street bus stop on the edge of campus to the 110 freeway, above 37th Street Students get resumd critiques from people in their desired career fields By KRISTIN MAYER Contributing Writer With resumes in hand and internships in mind, students gathered in the shadow of Tommy Trojan, Thursday, for Resuml Day, the first of a series of events this fall sponsored by the Career Planning and Placement Center; "This is an opportunity for students to get professional resuml advice from experts in their fields of interest These are the people that , make hiring decisions," said Kirk Snyder, assistant dean of the Career Planning and Placement Center. “This event is entirely student-focused in that the employers are here to empower the students to create the best possible resumt” About 30 groups of selected employers from around the country participated in the event by critiquing resumes and offering advice to students. “They represent a variety of industries and business functions,* said Eileen Kohan, executive director of the Career Planning and Placement Center. “It adds a layer of industry expertise over traditional resunj£ critique.” r It is usually the same companies wfio come to these events and regularly offer students jobs, Snyder said. “The employers have long-standing relationships with the university as internship providers and employers upon graduation,” Snyder said. Another resource is the USC alumni network, he said. “The Trojan Network is the most valuable netwoiking tool available to any USC student" Snyder said. While these events are largely targeted toward upperclassmen, it is important for freshmen to know about the Career Planning and • Placement Center, Snyder said. “It’s for everyone, freshmen through seniorsrbecause internships are an important part of their professional development” Snyder said. “More freshmen and sophomores are doing internships in order to be competitive in the marketplace and discover what they want to do in i see il>. page 21
