' The two teams, which won the first two men’s national collegiate championship tournaments «*er held, werehonoifedbyUSA Volleyball and USC in October in Heritage Hjall. Despite the national championships titles, die volleyball program was ended in 1951 after the university did not give Vogel’s team the financial aid it needed for the program to continue, Vogel said. It would not bf reborn until about 10 years later. Vogel’s teams were all but forgotten until recently, when Vogel began his quest to renew interest in the team. History Vogel, who grew up in Long Reach and learned to play volleyball on the sand, came to USC in 1946 lifter serving three years in World War II and briefly attending the UC Berkeley and Long Beach City College. ByZACHFOX “ # Staff Writer Five students are pushing to replace the flashing yellow light at the intersection of Adams Boulevard and Severance Street to improve the crosswalk’s safety. The group, which formed from a Writing 340 class, is proposing to install a light that would be green at all times except when a pedestrian pushes a button to cross, said" Craig O’Neill, a junior majoring in business. The light would turn red, forcing traffic to stop. “I fear for my life every time I cross the street," said Vivian Steiner, a junior majoring in international delations and one of the group members. ' "T[ ‘ ' The group presented its information and idea at a town hall meeting held by first district council member Ed Reyes at Norwood Elementary School two weeks ago. In the proposal, Steiner stated that motorists have come to ignore the flashing yellow light. “I think the record shows that they’re not working," said Jon Bickenbach, a junior majoring in business. Since the intersection is between the first and eighth districts, the group is collaborating with both areas. They are consulting with a civil engineer of the eighth district During the last two months, cars have hit eight pedestrians and bikers, according to the Department ot Public Safety. The group says the accidents show the crosswalk s needs modification in order to protect students’ safety. '> The reported incidents, however, did not occur at the Adams Boulevard and Severance Street intersection. • . •■-a* The proposal stemmed from a class writing prompt to propose a change that would better a Southern California community, Steiner said. , After finishing the paper for a grade, the group took the idea further and began circulating a petition near campus. Released list month, the report, titled “Recruiting Trends," is based on a national survey of 450 employers who projected their probability for employing students with bachelor degrees. According to this year's survey, 60 percent will hire more students out of college than last year. In the spring of 2004, the percent of students who will be hired straight out of college is predicted to increase from 3 percent to 8 percent according to a report conducted by the (Ollegiate Employment Research Institute, a sector of MSU’s Career Services and Placement center.
